MOBILE, Ala. — Men’s basketball forward Augustine Rubit and softball pitcher Hannah Campbell were named South Alabama’s top student-athletes Tuesday night at the fourth annual Pete Tolbert Night of Champions at the Mitchell Center.
The event recognized the academic and athletic achievements of the university’s nearly 400 student-athletes.
Student-Athletes of the Year
Rubit was named Jaguar Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He earned All-America honors from CollegeInsider.com and was a National Association of Basketball Coaches first-team All-District selection, among other honors.
Campbell was named Jaguar Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She leads the Sun Belt Conference in both ERA and saves, ranks in the national top five in both categories and is among the national top five in wins and strikeouts. In 33 appearances, Campbell is 18-7 with six saves, a 0.94 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 164 2/3 innings. She threw her first career no-hitter in March against UC Santa Barbara and has earned wins over nationally ranked Louisiana-Lafayette and Mississippi State and saves against Florida State, then ranked No. 25, and Ole Miss.
Woman of the Year Nominee
Softball’s Brittany Fowler is South Alabama’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year. Nominees must be varsity letterwinners completing their eligibility by the end of the spring season and must have excelled in academics, athletics, service and leadership with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Fowler is batting a team-best .406 with 52 hits, eight home runs, 31 RBI and 48 runs scored, ranking among the conference leaders in each category.
Scholarship and Special Awards
- Tom and Barbara Corcoran Scholar-Athlete Endowed Scholarship Award: Julie Moss. The award goes to a junior who excels in athletics while maintaining at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- Denny-Gottfried Athletic Scholarship Award: Brittany Campbell. The award supports a student-athlete with at least a 2.5 GPA who has completed NCAA eligibility and will graduate within two consecutive semesters. The senior has seven home runs this spring, more than her previous three seasons combined, and is batting .328 with 11 stolen bases and 33 runs scored.
- Jimmy Taylor Scholarship Award: Trey Clark. The award honors a student-athlete who has exhausted eligibility, maintained an outstanding GPA and achieved significant athletic accomplishments. Clark played every snap at center last season and started every game since the football program began in 2009. He was also a second-team Capital One Academic All-America selection.
- Male Perseverance Award: Romelle Jones.
- Female Perseverance Award: Kristyn Thacker.
- Male Jaguar Athletic Fund Award: Scott Garber, for the second straight year.
- Female Jaguar Athletic Fund Award: Amber Wyatt.
- Wilson Durgin Memorial Scholarship Award: Mychal Ammons.
- Auralia Crowell Freshman Scholar-Athlete Award: Cole Billingsley. The baseball freshman is batting .295 with 26 runs and 19 RBI.
- Forrest W. and Beverly B. Crowder Endowed Scholarship for Baseball: Brent Mitchell.
- Clifton Inge Endowed Baseball Award: Jacob Noble.
- McKinney Family Endowed Scholarship for Track and Field: Garrett Schumacher.
- Mayer Mitchell Quarterback Endowment Fund Award: Ross Metheny.
- George Smith Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund Award: Daniel Ballard.
- Matt Smith Award: Travis Toth. The award recognizes an athletics staff member who consistently goes the extra mile and is named for former South Alabama sports information director Matt Smith, who died in December 2004.

Graduates Honored
Forty-five South Alabama student-athletes are scheduled to receive their degrees at commencement in two weeks. They were presented Sun Belt Conference Graduation Medallions recognizing their athletic and academic accomplishments.
