MOBILE, Ala. — Six South Alabama football players were named to Phil Steele’s 2012 All-Sun Belt Conference postseason team, released Wednesday on philsteele.com, with senior linebacker Jake Johnson earning a first-team spot.
Steele, who publishes the annual Phil Steele College Football preview magazine, updates his work on his website throughout the season and releases postseason all-conference selections.
Johnson on First Team
Johnson, who led the Sun Belt in tackles this season, was South Alabama’s only first-team selection.
Page on Second Team
Junior defensive lineman Alex Page was the Jaguars’ lone second-team pick. Page made 64 tackles, fifth on the team, with 11.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, two pass breakups and five quarterback hurries.
Four on Fourth Team
Four Jaguars landed on the fourth team:
- Enrique Williams, junior linebacker, finished second on the team and seventh in the conference in tackles. He added a pass breakup, three quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
- Tyrell Pearson, junior defensive back, made 40 tackles, eighth on the team, with three tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups, four interceptions for 94 return yards and a forced fumble.
- T.J. Glover, sophomore punt returner, totaled 1,181 all-purpose yards in 13 games, nearly double the next-closest Jaguar. His total included 642 kickoff return yards, 210 rushing yards, 206 receiving yards and 123 punt return yards.
- Michel Chapuseaux, senior placekicker and a two-time Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week, made 20 of 27 field goal attempts (74.1 percent), including a career-long 53-yarder. Two of his attempts were blocked. He was 2-for-2 from 50 yards and beyond and made all 24 of his extra-point attempts.
The 2012 season was South Alabama’s first full season as a Football Bowl Subdivision program and its first as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. Joey Jones is the Jaguars’ head coach.
