MOBILE, Ala. — A new rugby club at the University of South Alabama signed up more than 70 interested students at JagFest on Saturday as organizers work to launch the sport on campus.
Club in Development
South Alabama Rugby is being organized as a club sport and remains in the early stages of development. Organizers said earlier this month that the club hopes to begin playing matches as soon as this fall, with many details still being finalized.
The club set up a booth at JagFest, held Aug. 21, to recruit players and share information about the program. Organizers had pointed to southalabamarugby.com as the place where updates would be posted as they become available.
Strong Turnout
Founding members of the club collected contact information from the more than 70 students who stopped by the booth to sign up during the event.
They also used the event to promote the team’s first meeting, which is scheduled for Sept. 14 in the meeting room at the university’s new Recreation Center.
What’s Next
The Sept. 14 meeting is the next step for students interested in joining the club. As a club sport, the team is organized by students rather than fielded by the South Alabama athletics department, which competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
