South Alabama Track and Field Sets Three School Records at Texas Relays

Connor Smith, Garrett Schumacher and Renaldo Frechou set South Alabama school records at the Texas Relays, and Bobbie Williamson posted a career-best hammer throw.

AUSTIN, Texas — Three South Alabama track and field athletes set school records Thursday at the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, as Connor Smith, Garrett Schumacher and Renaldo Frechou each moved to the top of the Jaguar record book.

Smith Wins Pole Vault Section

Senior Connor Smith won the Section B men’s pole vault with a clearance of 5.20 meters, topping the field of 16 and breaking his own school record by a tenth of a meter.

Schumacher Improves Decathlon Mark

Garrett Schumacher broke his own school record in the decathlon with 6,991 points, good for 11th place. He entered Thursday with 3,644 points through five events and set personal bests in the pole vault (4.80 meters), the discus (40.51 meters) and the hurdles (15.94).

Frechou Breaks Hammer Record Again

Freshman Renaldo Frechou set the school record in the hammer throw for the third time this season. His mark of 63.27 meters came on his sixth and final attempt and placed him fifth in a field of 25.

On the women’s side, Bobbie Williamson threw a career-best 59.53 meters in the hammer, the second-best mark in South Alabama history.

The Jaguars continue competition Friday with Jan-Louw Kotze in the discus and Tyler Agee in the 110-meter hurdles.

Weekend Home Schedule

The South Alabama baseball team hosts Sun Belt newcomer UT Arlington in a three-game series at Eddie Stanky Field beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, weather permitting. Saturday’s 3 p.m. game will be televised by the Sun Belt Network and available on WatchESPN, and Sunday’s finale begins at noon. All three games will be streamed on the university’s athletics website and broadcast on 105.5 FM WNSP and WNSP.com.

The South Alabama softball team hosts Louisiana-Monroe in a three-game series at Jaguar Field, beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and concluding at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Jaguar football team holds its annual Red-Blue Spring Game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Parking lots open at about 8 a.m. The spring game will not be the team’s final practice of the spring.
