MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama track and field athletes Jan-Louw Kotze and Leah Hixon were each named Sun Belt Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday, after both set school records at the Jaguar Invitational on Saturday.
Kotze Breaks Discus Record
Kotze, a freshman, won the men’s discus with a throw of 57.60 meters, breaking the previous South Alabama record by more than a meter. The mark ranks sixth in the NCAA Division I East Region and 13th nationally.
Kotze leads the Sun Belt Conference in the event, with his best throw more than four meters ahead of the next-closest competitor in the league.
Hixon Sets Javelin Mark
Hixon, a junior, set a school record in the women’s javelin with a winning throw of 46.90 meters. The throw ranks seventh in the Division I East Region and 17th in the nation, and it tops the Sun Belt rankings.
Hixon also contributed in other events at the Jaguar Invitational. She placed fifth in the high jump after clearing 1.59 meters and ran a leg on the Lady Jaguars’ ‘A’ 4×400-meter relay, which finished fourth in 4:07.22.
The award is Hixon’s second Sun Belt weekly honor of the season.
