South Alabama Volleyball Hands Louisiana-Lafayette First Loss in Five-Set Sun Belt Opener

South Alabama beat Louisiana-Lafayette in five sets to open Sun Belt play, handing the Ragin' Cajuns their first loss behind 17 kills from Jessica Lewis.

LAFAYETTE, La. — South Alabama opened Sun Belt Conference play with a five-set road win over Louisiana-Lafayette, handing the Ragin’ Cajuns their first loss of the season.

The Jaguars won 25-23, 17-25, 25-14, 17-25, 16-14 to improve to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the Sun Belt. Louisiana-Lafayette fell to 10-1 and 0-1 in conference play.

Lewis Leads the Attack

Jessica Lewis led South Alabama with 17 kills and added two solo blocks.

Mechell Daniel recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 13 digs. Nikki Gittens tied her career high with 12 kills and led the team with five total blocks, including one solo, and two service aces. Mallory Moore added 10 kills.

Hundt, Baker Contribute

Setter Emily Hundt posted her fourth double-double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs.

Abby Baker, the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, finished with 25 digs.

Back Home Sunday

South Alabama returns to Mobile to host Georgia State at noon Sunday in the Jaguar Gym.
