Freshman Mechell Daniel recorded a career-high 28 kills as South Alabama volleyball beat Troy 3-1 on the road to improve to 11-13 overall and 6-8 in the Sun Belt.

TROY, Ala. — Freshman Mechell Daniel posted a career-high 28 kills as South Alabama volleyball defeated Troy 3-1 on the road in Sun Belt Conference play.

The victory improved the Jaguars to 11-13 overall and 6-8 in league matches with two regular-season matches remaining, both at home.

Daniel Leads the Attack

Daniel’s 28 kills came on an efficient night at the net, as she hit .400 for the match. She also added eight digs and two block assists, contributing on both sides of the ball against the in-state Sun Belt rival.

Two other Jaguars reached double figures in kills. Jessica Lewis finished with 11 and Mallory Moore added 10. Daniel’s total by itself exceeded the combined output of Lewis and Moore, as the freshman carried the bulk of the South Alabama offense in the four-set match.

Strong Night at the Net

South Alabama also controlled play at the net defensively. Moore recorded a career-high nine block assists, and junior middle blocker Amber Wyatt finished with 10 total blocks, two solo and eight assisted. It was Wyatt’s second double-digit blocking performance of the season.

Final Home Weekend Ahead

The Jaguars close the regular season with two matches at the Jag Gym in Mobile. South Alabama hosts Texas-Arlington on Friday at 4 p.m. and finishes against Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at 1 p.m.

South Alabama enters the final weekend two games under .500 in Sun Belt play at 6-8 and two games under .500 overall at 11-13. The Jaguars will try to finish the regular season with a sweep of the two-match homestand against Texas-Arlington and Louisiana-Monroe, both fellow Sun Belt Conference members.
