Playoffs are next for local teams

Girls flag football’s regular season ends next week, and the postseason begins the week of Nov. 2. The AHSAA divides the sport into four championship brackets. Class 1A-4A, Class 5A and Class 6A are for public schools, and one private school division combines Classes A and AA. Thirty-two teams qualify in each of the Class 1A-4A and Class 5A brackets, 24 in Class 6A and 12 in the private division.

Local teams are well placed. Spanish Fort is the Class 5A, Region 1 champion, and entering the week Fairhope, Daphne and Alma Bryant had all clinched berths from Class 6A, Region 1. Our look at the region races has the full standings as they stood entering the week.

This year’s championship games will be played close to home. All four flag football title games are set for Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the University of South Alabama campus in Mobile:

  • Private school division: 10 a.m.
  • Class 1A-4A: 1 p.m.
  • Class 5A: 4 p.m.
  • Class 6A: 7 p.m.

The football state championships will follow at the same stadium through Dec. 5.

How girls flag football came to the AHSAA

The AHSAA announced in April 2021 that girls flag football would become a sanctioned sport that fall, in a partnership with the Atlanta Falcons, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and NFL FLAG. It was the 14th sport offered to girls at AHSAA member schools, and Alabama was among the first handful of states to offer it at the high school level. The first state championship game was played that December at the Super 7 football championships in Birmingham.

The sport has grown quickly since then, both across the state and on the Gulf Coast, where new programs such as Mobile Christian’s launched this fall. Games are played seven on seven, and players pull a flag from the ball carrier’s belt instead of tackling. That is why defensive statistics are counted in flag pulls, sacks and quarterback hurries.
