Citronelle knocks off No. 9 Orange Beach

Citronelle built a 17-0 halftime lead and then scored twice on defense in the fourth quarter to finish off a 38-7 win over Orange Beach, which was ranked No. 9 in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.

Javarious Coleman gave Citronelle its first two touchdowns on runs of 8 and 2 yards in the first half. Christian Rodriguez added a 33-yard field goal with 17 seconds left before halftime to make it 17-0.

Orange Beach got on the board in the third quarter when Lee Steele caught a touchdown pass, cutting the margin to 17-7. Citronelle answered. Coleman scored his third touchdown on another 2-yard run to make it 24-7, and Anthony Snow returned an interception 12 yards for a score. The final points came when Marquis Hughes stripped the Orange Beach quarterback on a sack and Kohen White scooped up the loose ball and ran it back 25 yards.

Both teams finished region play at 4-2 in Class 4A, Region 1, and both are 7-2 overall. Orange Beach has lost two of its last three games. Citronelle plays Escambia County next week, and Orange Beach travels to Holtville.

Vigor routs Satsuma, claims top seed

Vigor, which moved to No. 1 in the ASWA Class 4A poll this week, led 28-0 in the first half and beat Satsuma 43-7 at Wolfpack Stadium in Prichard.

Vigor, Williamson and Orange Beach entered the week tied atop the region, each with a win over one of the others. Vigor beat Williamson 12-0 on Oct. 15, and Citronelle’s win over Orange Beach on Friday left the Wolves with the region’s No. 1 seed. Vigor is 8-1 overall and 5-1 in region play. Williamson also finished 5-1 in the region after Thursday’s win.

Demetris Johnson scored on runs of 3 and 7 yards, and Jhi Brown added a 14-yard touchdown run as the first quarter ended. A two-point run by Miguel Wilson made it 21-0, and Anthony Gill then threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Prince.

Gill completed 11 of 13 passes for 157 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and at one point completed 10 passes in a row. Brown also caught four passes for 31 yards, and Zy Wilson had two catches for 72 yards. Freshman backup quarterback Britton Burrell threw two 4-yard touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, one to Levet Jones III and one to Carl Dees III.

Satsuma had only 3 yards of total offense in the first half and finished with 20 net rushing yards. Gators quarterback Andrew Sullivan was 3 of 7 passing for 18 yards. Satsuma’s touchdown came on a 25-yard score by Asher Waddill with 2:12 left in the third quarter. Satsuma is 4-5 and 1-5 in the region.

Vigor coach Renardo Jackson said Satsuma’s scheme tested his team’s discipline.

“I knew Satsuma would do some things schematically that would challenge our mental approach as far as knowing where to line up and not get out leveraged. We moved the ball pretty well, so it was a great win for us. We’re playing pretty consistent on defense right now. We’ve got a lot of seniors on that side of the ball, and when they’re focused, they’re hard to move the ball against.”

Vigor closes the regular season at Fairhope next Friday, and Satsuma hosts Flomaton.

Fairhope wins Class 6A, Region 1 title at Daphne

Fairhope won 27-24 at Daphne in the game that decided the Class 6A, Region 1 championship. Daphne came into the night 5-0 in the region and Fairhope 4-1, with the winner taking the crown. Daphne was ranked No. 10 in Class 6A this week.

Elsewhere in the region, Mary G. Montgomery beat Foley 24-13. MGM is banned from the postseason this year under AHSAA sanctions, and games against the Vikings do not count in the region standings.

Graham throws six touchdown passes as Baker beats Robertsdale

Baker quarterback Tate Graham threw for 380 yards and six touchdowns in a 49-21 win over Robertsdale, Baker’s third straight victory. Graham completed 16 of 29 passes. Four of them went to Jamien Pryor, who caught them for 144 yards, and all four were touchdowns.

Baker improved to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the region. Robertsdale fell to 1-8 and 1-5 but will still be in the playoffs as the region’s No. 6 seed. This season the AHSAA expanded Class 6A to six playoff teams per region in a 24-team bracket. Baker finishes the regular season against McGill-Toolen, and Robertsdale travels to Park Crossing.

Saraland and Gulf Shores roll in Class 5A, Region 1

All four Class 5A, Region 1 playoff teams played each other Friday. Saraland routed Spanish Fort 56-14 in a game that figured to go a long way toward settling the region’s No. 2 seed. Gulf Shores, which clinched the region title a week earlier with a 36-0 win at Spanish Fort, beat Theodore 33-7. The Dolphins entered the night 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the region, so the win completes an unbeaten regular-season run through region play.

Saraland and Spanish Fort both entered at 5-1 in the region and Theodore at 4-2. Gulf Shores finishes the region at 7-0, Saraland at 6-1, Spanish Fort at 5-2 and Theodore at 4-3. In Class 5A, the top two seeds from each region host first-round games. Gulf Shores hosts Bayside Academy in a non-region game next week.

In other Baldwin County games, Blount beat Elberta 41-8 and Baldwin County shut out Murphy 28-0.

UMS-Wright takes the top seed; St. Michael rallies

UMS-Wright won 20-17 at McGill-Toolen. Both teams entered 6-0 in Private Class AA, Region 1, and the winner took the region title and the No. 1 seed. The game also renewed a rivalry that dates to 1922. The schools had not played since 2013, and McGill-Toolen had won the last four meetings. McGill-Toolen will be the region’s No. 2 seed.

St. Michael fell behind Montgomery Catholic 24-0 in the first half and came back to win 38-31, its sixth straight victory. Marshall Pitre threw two touchdown passes and Nygel Mitchell ran for three scores. Pitre was 16 of 25 for 180 yards, and Mitchell ran for 233 yards on 26 carries. Brayden Walton caught nine passes for 94 yards and a touchdown, and Anthony Howard also caught a touchdown pass.

The comeback came on the same day St. Michael coach Philip Rivers announced that star quarterback Gunner Rivers would be shut down for the rest of the regular season.

The Cardinals are 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the region and will be the No. 3 seed. Montgomery Catholic fell to 5-5 and 4-3 and has lost three straight, all by seven points or less. St. Michael hosts Foley to close the regular season.

Also in the region, St. Paul’s won 39-7 at Houston Academy, and Glenwood beat Faith Academy 42-14.

Providence Christian claims the last Private Class A berth

Providence Christian won 27-20 at St. Luke’s in a game between teams tied at 3-3 in Private Class A, Region 1. The winner earned the region’s last playoff spot, so Providence joins Bayside Academy, Mobile Christian and Cottage Hill Christian in the postseason. Mobile Christian beat Bayshore Christian 35-7, and Cottage Hill Christian beat Northside Methodist 75-0.

Jackson, Escambia County and area schools

Jackson bounced back from its 24-21 loss to T.R. Miller, which was decided on a field goal as time expired in a game moved to Monday because of Hurricane Isaias, by beating Excel 71-14. Tristan Love ran for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns. Jackson is 6-3 overall and 6-1 in Class 3A, Region 1 and travels to Hillcrest-Evergreen next week. Excel is 1-8 and 1-6 and hosts Monroe County.

In Escambia County, T.R. Miller shut out Wilcox Central 35-0 in Brewton, and W.S. Neal held off Flomaton 33-27 in East Brewton. That sets up a meeting of the two neighbors next Friday at Brewton Municipal Stadium in their annual “Battle of Murder Creek” rivalry. Escambia County beat Opp 21-20.

In Clarke County, Thomasville beat Hillcrest-Evergreen 48-21. In Washington County, Leroy, which clinched the Class 1A, Region 1 title last week, beat Washington County 26-18.

Around the state

Briarwood Christian 28, American Christian 14

Top-ranked Briarwood Christian scored 14 second-half points to break a tie and beat fourth-ranked American Christian in a matchup of unbeaten Private Class AA teams. The Lions (10-0, 7-0) earned the No. 1 seed in Region 2, and American Christian (8-1, 6-1) will be the No. 2 seed.

Quarterback Jamison Barnes ran 5 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 48 seconds left in the third quarter after Briarwood recovered a muffed punt at the American Christian 16. Barnes threw only 10 passes and completed three, but two went for touchdowns: 68 yards to John Campbell and 30 yards to Sam Canale. Briarwood ran for 224 of its 333 total yards.

Other statewide results

Thompson (8-1, 6-1 in Class 6A, Region 3) is off next week. The Warriors’ game against Choctawhatchee was canceled because the Fort Walton Beach, Fla., school is still dealing with the effects of Hurricane Isaias.
  • Maplesville 65, Billingsley 0: The Red Devils, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in this week’s ASWA poll, posted their third straight shutout.

What comes next

Next week is the final week of the regular season, and every game for Mobile and Baldwin County teams is a non-region contest. Those games will not change playoff qualification or seeding. Games on the schedule include Vigor at Fairhope, Bayside Academy at Gulf Shores, Baker against McGill-Toolen, Foley at St. Michael, Flomaton at Satsuma, LeFlore at Faith Academy and W.S. Neal at T.R. Miller. Williamson is off.

The AHSAA posts official region standings and tiebreaker results after each week’s games, and the first-round playoff pairings will follow. The road ends close to home for this year’s contenders: all 12 AHSAA football and flag football state championship games will be played Dec. 1-5 at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the University of South Alabama campus in Mobile.
