MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama added 13 players on National Signing Day on Wednesday, completing the first full recruiting class under head coach Steve Campbell, whose staff has been on the job for about two months.
The Jaguars signed 10 players in December during the first early signing period for college football, just 12 days after Campbell took over the program. Eight of those December signees were defensive players.
Offense the Focus in February
The February group leaned the other way. Of the 13 players added Wednesday, 11 are offensive players. Two of the 13 are blue shirts and three are preferred walk-ons.
A blue shirt is a player who is not officially recruited, meaning he did not take an official visit, but who is placed on scholarship when freshman practice begins. Such players can count toward the following year’s scholarship total. A preferred walk-on is generally guaranteed a spot on the 105-man preseason roster without having to earn one in tryouts, and is in a better position to eventually earn a scholarship.
Class Profile
Twelve of the 23 signees in the class are from Alabama, with the rest coming from five other states. Five were rated three-star prospects by 247Sports, including quarterback Desmond Trotter, the grandson of Ozzie Newsome, the former Alabama star, College and Pro Football Hall of Famer and current general manager of the Baltimore Ravens. Two signees were rated two-star prospects.
