South Alabama Adds 26 on National Signing Day, Including 10 Junior College Transfers

Steve Campbell's South Alabama staff announced 26 additions on National Signing Day: 10 junior college transfers, 15 high school players and one grayshirt.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama announced 26 additions to its football program on National Signing Day on Wednesday, a class made up of 10 junior college transfers, 15 high school players and one grayshirt.

Head coach Steve Campbell pointed to the size and speed of the group. The Jaguars needed to replace players lost to graduation and also to fill spots left by transfers.

Departures Through the Transfer Portal

Nine South Alabama players have entered the NCAA transfer portal, including punter Corliss Waitman, wide receivers Jordan McCray and David Gardner, offensive linemen Ryan Alexander, Rowan Godwin and Ben Becker, and tight end Masseiah Francis.

Grayshirt

  • Tanner McGee, QB, 6-4, 200, Randleman, N.C. A dual-threat quarterback, McGee set a school record with 3,604 yards of total offense and 41 touchdowns and was named Randolph County Player of the Year as a senior.

Junior College Signees

  • Conner Estes, RT, 6-5, 325, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Estes originally signed with Louisiana Tech out of high school.
  • Gi’Narious Johnson, DL, 6-0, 285, Pearl River Community College. Johnson is a two-time state weightlifting champion.
  • Kelvin Johnson, LB, 6-0, 210, Independence (Kan.) Community College. Johnson was ranked the No. 4 junior college linebacker in the nation and is expected to help replace Bull Barge.
  • Tyler Morton, QB, 6-4, 205, Hinds (Miss.) Community College. Morton was the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback in junior college.
  • Devin Rockette, CB, 5-10, 175, Northwest Mississippi Community College. Rockette originally signed with South Alabama before going the junior college route. He enrolled in January.
  • Patrick Rosette, rover/OLB, 6-1, 190, Northeast Oklahoma A&M. Rosette originally signed with Houston out of high school.
  • Jacob Shoemaker, OL, 6-4, 340, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Shoemaker was a second-team All-MACJC South Division selection last season.
  • Jamel Thomas, 6-1, 175, Itawamba (Miss.) Community College. Thomas led the NJCAA in receiving yards per game, catching 59 passes for 934 yards and eight touchdowns.
  • Nick Thompson, 6-4, 275, Holmes (Miss.) Community College. A tackle in high school, Thompson will play tight end for South Alabama.
  • Tre Young, S, 5-11, 170, East Central Community College. Young, a McGill-Toolen graduate, was also recruited by Troy.

High School Signees

  • Damean Bivins, RB, 6-0, 235, Pace (Fla.) High School. Bivins was named Florida’s Class 6A Player of the Year after rushing for 2,273 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior.
  • Brandon Crum, TE, 6-3, 270, Auburn (Ala.) High School.
  • Brentt Cunningham, OLB, 6-1, 185, West Point (Miss.) High School. Cunningham captained the defense on a team that won three consecutive state championships.
  • Dallas Gamble, DB, 6-0, 170, Booneville (Miss.) High School. A running back in high school, Gamble will play defense for the Jaguars.
  • John Gill, OL, 6-4, 310, Pine Forest (Fla.) High School. Gill was recruited by Maryland and Illinois.
  • Jack Green, OL, 6-0, 265, Brandon (Miss.) High School. Green attended South Alabama football camps from a young age.
  • Brock Higdon, DE, 6-7, 215, Pelham (Ala.) High School. Higdon was also recruited by Western Kentucky.
  • Noah Karwacki, PK, 6-2, 190, Vista PEAK (Colo.) Prep. Karwacki also averaged 50.1 yards per punt.
  • Ryan Melton, CB, 6-0, 180, West Point (Miss.) High School. Melton made 46 tackles and three interceptions as a senior for the Class 5A state champions.
  • Bryson Nelson, OL, 372 pounds, Crestview (Fla.) High School.
  • AJ Phillips, LB, 5-11, 225, Chickasaw (Ala.) High School. A running back in high school, Phillips will move to linebacker.
  • Dajon Richard, WR, 5-10, 170, Patterson (La.) High School. Richard is expected to play in the slot and contribute as a kick and punt returner.
  • Wykevious Thomas, DL, 6-4, 330, Riverdale (Ga.) High School. Thomas made 48 tackles, 13 for loss, as a senior.
  • Devin Voisin, WR, 6-0, 180, Crestview (Fla.) High School. Voisin may also return kicks.
  • Jaden Voisin, S, 6-0, 185, Crestview (Fla.) High School. Devin’s twin brother had more than 700 receiving yards and nine interceptions. The twins will join an older brother who signed with South Alabama and redshirted last season.

Program Notes

Campbell is entering his second season as South Alabama’s head coach. The Jaguars compete in the Sun Belt Conference and play home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
