Halloween night lands on a Saturday this year, and families in south Baldwin County have a free way to spend it. The Tanger Foley Boo Bash returns Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., filling the green at Tanger Outlets Foley with candy, games, an escape room, a glowing bubble tent and plenty of other spooky fun. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.
What’s on the Boo Bash lineup
The annual community celebration takes place on the green near the Michael Kors and Polo Ralph Lauren stores, giving families an open, central spot to gather in costume for an evening of Halloween entertainment without an admission fee.
Organizers have packed the evening with activities for children and families, including:
- Candy for trick-or-treaters
- Games presented by Roto-Rooter
- An escape room
- A glowing bubble tent
- A photo booth
- Face painting
- Balloon art
- Caricature art
Organizers say more activities will be on hand as well, so families can plan to stay for the full two and a half hours.
A shot at prizes for Tanger Club members
Members of Tanger Club, the shopping center’s rewards program, will get an extra perk at Boo Bash: a chance to try their luck at a claw machine and take home prizes.
Shoppers who are not yet members and want a turn may want to look into joining before the event.
Sponsors behind the celebration
The free event is made possible by local business sponsors:
- Rouses Markets
- Gulf Coast HVAC
- Reed Fire Protection
Roto-Rooter is presenting the games.
Halloween at the outlets
Tanger Outlets Foley sits at 2601 S. McKenzie St., along the Highway 59 corridor that carries much of the traffic between Interstate 10 and the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The open-air center is a regular stop for locals and visitors alike, and seasonal events like Boo Bash turn it into a community gathering spot.
Holding Boo Bash on the green keeps the activities in one open area, which makes it easier for parents to keep track of children moving from the bubble tent to the face painting station to the candy. It also means families can park once and spend the evening on foot.
Because the event begins at 6 p.m., Boo Bash also gives families a well-lit, organized alternative or addition to neighborhood trick-or-treating on Halloween night itself. With Halloween falling on a Saturday, many families will have the evening free and may want to combine an early dinner, some shopping and the Boo Bash festivities.
More Halloween fun around south Baldwin
Boo Bash caps a busy month of Halloween events in the area, and families who want to stretch the season can find something nearly every weekend.
- Boo at the Zoo: Saturday, Oct. 17, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores. The scare-free morning offers trick-or-treating stations and meet-and-greets with animal ambassadors, and it is included with regular zoo admission. Guests who come in costume get a chance at a gift shop prize.
- Trek or Treat: Saturday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Learning Campus and Woodside Restaurant at Gulf State Park. The free event mixes arts and crafts, pumpkin carving, live animals, scavenger hunts, a candy buffet and live music.
- Foley Witches Ride: Saturday, Oct. 24, beginning at 5 p.m. in downtown Foley and ending with an after-party at Heritage Park. The ride is for women 21 and older; after-party tickets are open to everyone else, and proceeds go to local charities and schools.
- The Wharf Trunk or Treat: Wednesday, Oct. 28, at The Wharf in Orange Beach. Kids’ activities begin at 5 p.m., trunk-or-treating at 6 p.m., a family movie at 7 p.m. and laser light shows at 8 and 8:30 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
- Foley Hometown Halloween: Thursday, Oct. 29, 5:30 to 8 p.m., in downtown Foley, with game booths, hayrides, a cake walk, a costume contest and streets closed to traffic.
Older teens and adults looking for real scares have another option in Foley: the Primal Fear haunted attraction at OWA, which runs through the Halloween season.
Taken together, the calendar gives families the option of a daytime outing, a downtown street party and an evening event like Boo Bash, so parents can pick what fits their children’s ages and comfort level with things that go bump in the night.
Halloween safety reminders
Whether families head to Boo Bash, a neighborhood or both, a few simple precautions can help keep the night safe:
- Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes and carry a flashlight after dark.
- Choose face paint over masks when possible so children can see clearly.
- Keep young children with an adult, and agree on a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated in a crowd.
- Check candy before children eat it, and set aside anything unwrapped or that could be a choking hazard for small children.
- Watch for traffic in parking lots, where drivers may have trouble seeing small trick-or-treaters.
