When hurricane forecasters talk about how busy a season really was, they lean on more than a simple head count of named storms. One of the tools they use is a measure called ACE — Accumulated Cyclone Energy.
ACE is the total energy a tropical storm or hurricane expends over its life. Rather than just tallying how many storms formed, it accounts for how long they lasted and how intense they became. The calculation squares a named storm’s wind speed every six hours and adds those values together, producing a single number that captures the season’s overall power.
The 2021 Atlantic season produced 21 named storms, seven of which became hurricanes and four of those major hurricanes. That above-average tally made it an active year, following a run of five similarly busy seasons. Yet four of 2021’s named storms lived less than 48 hours and never struck land — brief, weak systems that can inflate the raw storm count.
That is where ACE helps. A minimal tropical storm that lingers for a week before briefly reaching hurricane strength, then fades, contributes far more to ACE than a quick-developing major hurricane that peaks for only a few hours. Shorter-lived, weaker storms add little. The index gives a fairer way to compare recent seasons with those from decades before satellites and computers.
Even so, ACE has limits. It says nothing about landfalls and offers no clue whether a tropical depression will stall and flood a region. A depression that never reaches named status adds nothing to ACE, yet can still prove deadly and costly. Like the simple named-storm count, ACE cannot answer the question every Gulf Coast resident asks each spring: What will actually happen here?
The past six seasons would rank as more active or energetic than average by ACE as well. But the record shows that raw numbers can mislead — the 30 named storms of 2020, researchers note, rank only 13th busiest by ACE.
