Three decades of hits
Matchbox Twenty formed in Orlando, Florida, in the mid-1990s and broke through with its debut album, “Yourself or Someone Like You,” released in October 1996. That record produced radio staples including “Push,” “3AM” and “Real World” and made the band one of the defining rock acts of the late 1990s.
The group followed with “Mad Season” in 2000, which included “Bent,” the band’s first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the years, Matchbox Twenty built a devoted fan base with songs such as “If You’re Gone,” “Unwell” and “How Far We’ve Come.” Frontman Rob Thomas also found major success outside the band, including as co-writer and singer of Santana’s “Smooth.”
The band has continued to record and tour, releasing “Where the Light Goes” in 2023. The anniversary tour celebrates 30 years since the debut album arrived, and the band’s milestone plans extend well into 2027.
Thomas told Rolling Stone Australia that the anniversary celebrations would begin in late 2026 with U.S. festival appearances before the band heads abroad, including a return to Australia in 2027. The band last toured Australia in 2024 in support of “Where the Light Goes.”
About The Wharf Amphitheater
The Wharf Amphitheater is Orange Beach’s premier outdoor music venue and regularly hosts major touring acts. The open-air amphitheater sits along the Intracoastal Waterway at The Wharf, a shopping, dining, marina and entertainment district that was the first entertainment district in Alabama. Big shows at the venue draw about 10,000 fans, and the amphitheater has been nominated in multiple years for the Academy of Country Music’s outdoor venue award.
The venue’s season typically includes around 20 major acts, drawing fans from across Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle. Many concertgoers pair a show with a beach trip, and The Wharf offers on-site condominiums and a hotel within walking distance of the stage.
A growing 2027 lineup
Matchbox Twenty joins a 2027 calendar that is already taking shape at The Wharf. Country star Riley Green announced in September that his 2027 “That’s Just Me Tour” will make its only Alabama stop at the amphitheater on June 4, 2027.
