Def Leppard: more than four decades of hits
Def Leppard formed in Sheffield, England, in the late 1970s and became one of the defining hard rock bands of the 1980s. The group has sold more than 110 million albums worldwide, and its catalog includes the landmark albums “Pyromania” and “Hysteria.” “Hysteria,” released in 1987, produced a string of hit singles, including “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Love Bites” and “Armageddon It,” and remains one of the best-selling albums of its era.
The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Its story is also one of perseverance: drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a 1984 car crash and returned to the band using a custom electronic drum kit, playing on the records that made Def Leppard a global arena act.
Today’s lineup features singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, Allen, and guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell. The band has continued to release new music, including the 2022 studio album “Diamond Star Halos,” and in 2023 it released “Drastic Symphonies,” which reworked many of its classic songs with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2022 and 2023, Def Leppard co-headlined stadium tours across North America with Mötley Crüe.
The band has stayed busy on the road. Earlier this year, Def Leppard completed its third sold-out Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace, followed by performances across the United Kingdom, Europe, South America and Mexico.
Goo Goo Dolls and The Struts round out the bill
Goo Goo Dolls, the band from Buffalo, New York, fronted by singer and guitarist John Rzeznik, are best known for “Iris,” the Diamond-certified 1998 hit that has amassed more than six billion streams worldwide. The group has sold more than 15 million records, earned four Grammy nominations and built a catalog of chart-topping songs over more than three decades, including “Slide,” “Name” and “Black Balloon.”
Opening the night are The Struts, the British rock band known for theatrical live shows and songs including “Could Have Been Me,” “Kiss This” and “Body Talks.” The Struts have shared stages with The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters and Guns N’ Roses, and they are expected to bring their glam-rock energy to the Mobile show. Formed in England in the early 2010s and fronted by singer Luke Spiller, the band broke through with its debut album, “Everybody Wants,” and has become a popular opening act on major rock tours.
A busy first season at Regions Arena
The Def Leppard concert is the latest major event announced for Regions Arena’s inaugural season. The arena will celebrate its grand opening with a three-night hometown run by Mobile’s own The Red Clay Strays, joined by St. Paul & The Broken Bones, March 25–27, 2027.
Other announced events include:
- Comedian Matt Mathews, April 3, 2027
- Dancing with the Stars: Live!, April 7, 2027
- Def Leppard with Goo Goo Dolls and The Struts, April 20, 2027
- The Harlem Globetrotters, April 24, 2027
Regions Arena is a roughly $300 million entertainment complex being built downtown on the footprint of the demolished Mobile Civic Center. The city broke ground on the project in May 2025, and Oak View Group operates the venue for the city. Construction delays caused by heavy rain pushed the arena’s completion into spring 2027, which meant the building will not host Mardi Gras events in 2027, city officials said earlier this fall.
Building an opening-season calendar
With the Def Leppard date, Regions Arena’s spring 2027 calendar now includes a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band, a nationally touring dance show, a comedy act whose evening show has already sold out, and the Harlem Globetrotters, all in the span of about a month after the grand opening. Additional events are expected to be announced as the opening approaches.
Fans can follow Regions Arena and Ticketmaster for presale details, ticket prices and venue policies, including bag rules and parking information, as the opening season draws closer.
