Not connected to the storm
The crash happened on a day when much of Mobile was getting ready for Hurricane Isaias. The storm had become a major hurricane Friday morning and came ashore that night near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. Its outer effects had started reaching the Mobile area earlier Friday.
Even so, authorities said the Moffett Road crash was not related to the hurricane. Isaias was later blamed for four deaths in Alabama and Florida, none of them in Mobile or Baldwin counties.
On Friday, the City of Mobile was under a civil emergency. City offices were closed, and Mobile County public schools had canceled classes for the day. Officials had urged residents to finish their storm preparations and stay off the roads once conditions got worse, and the city put an overnight curfew in place from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.
About Moffett Road
Moffett Road is one of Mobile’s main routes northwest out of the city. It carries U.S. Highway 98 out through west Mobile and the Semmes area toward northwest Mobile County and, eventually, Mississippi. Along much of its length inside the city, it is a busy commercial corridor with businesses, side streets and driveways, and it carries traffic at all hours.
What happens next
In fatal crashes, Mobile police traffic investigators generally rebuild the sequence of events from evidence at the scene, including the vehicle’s final position, marks on the road, and damage to the vehicle and the tree. They also interview witnesses and anyone who survived. A vehicle’s event data recorder, sometimes called a “black box,” can capture details such as speed and braking in the seconds before a crash. The medical examiner’s findings can show whether a medical problem was involved.
Police have not said when they expect to release more information. When single-vehicle crashes like this one are investigated, it can be weeks before the cause is determined.
