MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama junior Augustine Rubit was named the 2012-13 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year on Wednesday in voting by the league’s coaches and media, becoming the first Jaguar to win the award since Jeff Hodge in 1989.
Rubit also earned first-team All-Sun Belt honors for the second consecutive season. CollegeInsider.com named him its Sun Belt Player of the Year on Monday.
Augustine Rubit’s Season
Rubit averaged 18.9 points, 10.8 rebounds and 33.3 minutes per game during the regular season and recorded 16 double-doubles. He scored 20 or more points 13 times, including three 30-point games, and set a career high with 34 points against Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 14.
School Free-Throw Record
Rubit set a South Alabama single-season record with 177 made free throws. He ranks third in NCAA Division I in both free throws made and free throws attempted per game.
Climbing the Record Books
Rubit scored his 1,000th career point this season and ranks ninth in school history with 1,337 points.
His 878 career rebounds rank second all-time at South Alabama and 10th in Sun Belt history. His 302 rebounds this season are the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.
Jaguars Earn Tournament Bye
South Alabama finished the regular season 17-11 overall and 14-6 in Sun Belt play, its most conference wins since the 2007-08 season.
The Jaguars earned a first-round bye in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and will play their first game Saturday night.

CollegeInsider.com honored three players and coaches in its Sun Belt awards. In addition to Rubit’s Player of the Year selection, the site named Middle Tennessee’s Brandon Peterson its Most Valuable Player and Middle Tennessee’s Kermit Davis its Coach of the Year.
Rubit, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound junior from Houston, also added 36 blocks, 31 assists and 19 steals during the regular season.
