FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Eastern Shore’s gumbo cooks are getting their roux ready. The Kiwanis Club of the Eastern Shore will host its 15th annual Best of the Bay Gumbo Championship & Fall Festival on Saturday, Nov. 7, in downtown Fairhope.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Coastal Alabama Community College Halstead Amphitheater, 450 Fairhope Ave. Guests can sample as much gumbo as they like, vote for their favorite and enjoy live music, crafts and children’s activities, all while raising money for schools and youth programs across Baldwin County.
Professionals and Amateurs in the Same Pot
The championship brings together local professional chefs, restaurants and amateur community cooking teams, who compete across multiple divisions. That mix is part of the event’s appeal: a backyard cook with a treasured family recipe can share the spotlight with some of the area’s best-known kitchens.
Restaurant competitors in past years have included local favorites such as Pearl, Hattie’s, Locals and Gambino’s, giving guests a chance to compare well-known restaurant recipes side by side with those of community teams.
All-You-Can-Eat Tastings and People’s Choice
A ticket buys access to all-you-can-eat gumbo tastings. Attendees can move from booth to booth, sampling as many styles as their appetites allow.
Guests also have a say in the outcome. Each attendee can vote for the People’s Choice Award, one of the most sought-after honors of the day, which goes to the gumbo the crowd likes best.
Gumbo debates are a Gulf Coast pastime. Cooks disagree about how dark to take the roux, whether okra or filé powder should thicken the pot, and whether seafood, chicken and sausage, or some combination makes the best version. A tasting event with many entries gives guests a chance to settle those arguments for themselves.
A Fall Festival Around the Competition
The gumbo is the main attraction, but the fall festival rounds out the afternoon. The WhiteLang band will provide live music, and local arts and crafts vendors will set up booths for holiday shoppers.
Families will find children’s activities and community treats. In past years, the event’s kids’ area has included inflatables and face painting. In previous years, organizers have also encouraged guests to bring lawn chairs or blankets to spread out on the lawn near the amphitheater.
Proceeds Support Baldwin County Youth
The Best of the Bay Gumbo Championship is a fundraiser. Proceeds will directly benefit local schools, youth programs and community enrichment projects throughout Baldwin County.
That mission reflects the broader purpose of Kiwanis International, a global service organization whose clubs focus on serving children in their communities. Local Kiwanis clubs typically raise money through events like this one and then return the proceeds to schools, scholarships, youth sports, literacy programs and other projects that benefit young people.
The championship has become a long-running tradition for the Eastern Shore club. The 2024 edition was its 13th, and this year’s event marks the 15th.
Tickets
Advance tickets are $17.85 online. Admission at the gate on the day of the event will be $20. Children 12 and under are admitted free, making the festival an affordable outing for families.
A Busy Gumbo Saturday on the Coast
Nov. 7 will be a big day for gumbo lovers in Baldwin County. The Orange Beach Gumbo Festival is also scheduled that day at CoastAL Orange Beach, giving fans of the dish more than one place to taste and vote. The Fairhope championship’s downtown setting puts guests within walking distance of the city’s shops and restaurants for anyone who wants to make a full day of it.
The Halstead Amphitheater, on the Fairhope campus of Coastal Alabama Community College on Fairhope Avenue, sits close to the heart of downtown. Its open lawn makes it a comfortable setting for a fall afternoon of food and music.
