Blue Velvet Studio turned the cold snap of mid-January 2011 into a reason to pick up a paintbrush, inviting guests and local artists to a free mosaic-painting party during Mobile’s ArtWalk on Friday, Jan. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at its second-floor space at 709 Dauphin St.
The setup was simple and deliberately welcoming: three walls of canvases, plenty of paint, and drop cloths everywhere. Visitors of every age and skill level were encouraged to grab a brush and help fill the canvases with murals — no experience required. Organizers set aside a dedicated painting site for kids, and anyone too shy to paint could simply warm up with a refreshment and watch or socialize.
ArtWalk With a Twist
The event leaned into the winter weather rather than fighting it. With temperatures too cold to hit all of the galleries along the Lower Dauphin strip, the studio offered an indoor alternative: come in from the cold, get comfortable, and make something. Guests were welcome to bring their own paint or use what the studio supplied.
