FOLEY, Ala. — The Foley Elks Club is putting cash on the table for two consecutive nights in October, with a talent search on a Friday and a Battle of the Bands on a Saturday — the second of which carries a prize package considerably larger than its entry fee.
Friday, Oct. 16: The Talent Search
The Foley Elks Club will host a local talent search beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at 2621 South Juniper Street in Foley.
Solo acts, magicians, standup comedians and solo singers will compete for a $300 first-place prize.
Admission: $5
Contestant registration: $10
The category list is broader than most local talent competitions. Magicians and standup comedians compete alongside singers, which makes for an unpredictable evening and gives performers whose acts do not fit a music-only format somewhere to compete.
Saturday, Oct. 17: Battle of the Bands at the Flora-Bama
The Battle of the Bands begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Flora-Bama Lounge.
The winning band receives a package rather than just a check:
- $500 cash
- A gig at the Flora-Bama
- A two-hour recording session at Red Room Sound Studio
- A two-inch analog demo tape

Why the Prize Package Is Worth More Than the Cash
For a working regional band, the $500 is the least valuable item on that list.

The two-inch analog demo tape is the unusual one. Two-inch tape is the traditional professional multitrack recording format, and it is largely an anachronism in an industry that records digitally. Its inclusion signals something about Red Room Sound Studio’s approach and gives the winning band a physical artifact in a medium that has become genuinely rare.

Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks lodges have long functioned as community venues in small American cities, hosting events that support charitable programs. Talent competitions in particular have been an Elks staple for decades.
