MOBILE, Ala. — Franklin Primary Health Center has added Dr. Vicki Baldwin, a board-certified internal medicine physician with more than 25 years of experience, to its team of providers in Mobile. Baldwin will provide adult primary care at the organization’s Charles White Family Health Center.

Her arrival gives Franklin another experienced physician focused on the kind of long-term, relationship-based care that adults with chronic illnesses often need, from routine checkups and screenings to ongoing management of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

A focus on prevention and chronic disease

Baldwin brings extensive experience in preventive medicine, chronic disease management, geriatric care and population health, according to Franklin.

Throughout her career, she has concentrated on helping patients take charge of their health through individualized treatment plans, preventive screenings and continuing care for chronic medical conditions.

Each of those areas plays a distinct role in adult primary care:

  • Preventive medicine focuses on keeping people healthy and catching problems early, through measures such as routine screenings, vaccinations and counseling on diet, exercise and tobacco use.
  • Chronic disease management involves the ongoing care of long-lasting conditions, including adjusting medications, monitoring test results and helping patients avoid complications.
  • Geriatric care addresses the particular needs of older adults, who are more likely to manage several conditions and medications at the same time.
  • Population health looks beyond the individual exam room to the health of a whole group of patients, using data to identify who is overdue for care or at higher risk and to improve results across a community.

Leadership and practice experience along the Gulf Coast

Before joining Franklin, Baldwin served as Gulf Coast Market medical director for Sage Health in Mobile. In that role she provided clinical leadership, supported quality improvement initiatives and helped advance standards of patient care.

She previously practiced internal medicine at Oak Street Health in Mobile and at Coastal Family Health Center in Moss Point, Mississippi. Earlier in her career, she worked with several medical organizations in Florida and Ohio.

That mix of experience, including time in community health and in clinical leadership, gives her a perspective on both one-on-one patient care and the systems that support it. Quality improvement work, for example, typically involves tracking measures such as how many patients receive recommended screenings or how well chronic conditions are controlled, then changing clinic processes to improve those numbers.

Education and board certification

Baldwin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and psychobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She completed her medical education at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Southern California.

She is board-certified in internal medicine. Board certification is a voluntary credential beyond a medical license; physicians earn it by completing an accredited residency and passing a rigorous examination in their specialty, and they must take part in continuing certification to maintain it.

What an internist does

Internal medicine physicians, often called internists, specialize in the care of adults. They are trained to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses, from common infections to complex conditions that affect several organ systems at once.

Many internists, like Baldwin, work as primary care doctors, serving as a patient’s first point of contact and coordinating care with specialists when needed. Because internists see adults over many years, they are often well positioned to notice gradual changes in a patient’s health and to manage multiple chronic conditions together.

For patients, having a regular primary care doctor can make a significant difference. Routine visits make it easier to keep up with recommended screenings, manage medications safely and address health concerns before they become emergencies.
