What dozens of evidence markers can mean
The numbered markers that crime scene investigators place at a shooting scene flag items and locations that need to be photographed, measured and, in many cases, collected. They can mark spent shell casings, bullet fragments, damage to vehicles or buildings, clothing and other items that may help detectives reconstruct what happened.
Police have not said what the markers on Lincoln Street identified. In general, however, a large number of markers at a shooting scene often reflects a significant amount of physical evidence spread over an area. Investigators use that evidence, along with witness accounts and any available video, to try to determine how many people fired, from where and in what direction.
Shell casings recovered at shooting scenes can also be entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, a federal database run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that helps law enforcement agencies link casings from different crime scenes to the same firearm.
About Trinity Gardens
Trinity Gardens is a residential neighborhood in north Mobile, bordering the city of Prichard. Saturday’s shooting comes as many families across Mobile prepare for Halloween evening, when children are expected to be out in neighborhoods across the city.
How the investigation typically proceeds
In the hours and days after a shooting, detectives generally work to identify and interview witnesses, canvass the neighborhood for home security or business cameras that may have captured the incident, and review the physical evidence collected at the scene. If the wounded person is able to speak with investigators, his account can also be important.
When police develop enough evidence to identify a suspect, they typically seek a warrant from a magistrate. Charges in shootings where someone is wounded can range from assault to attempted murder, depending on the circumstances and the evidence. Anyone charged would be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Resources for victims of violent crime
People who are injured in violent crimes in Alabama, and in some cases their families, may be eligible for help through the Alabama Crime Victims’ Compensation Commission, a state agency that can assist with expenses such as medical bills, counseling and lost wages that are not covered by insurance or other sources. Victim service officers with local law enforcement agencies and the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office can also help connect victims with support as a case moves forward.
Residents who hear gunshots are encouraged to call 911 right away rather than assuming someone else has reported it. Even when no one appears to be hurt, prompt reports help officers respond quickly, locate evidence and determine whether anyone needs medical help.
