MOBILE, Ala. — Freshman quarterback Kyle Stewart has left the South Alabama football team for personal and family reasons, just days into the Jaguars’ first preseason camp.
Stewart plans to enroll at Florida State in January and is not expected to continue playing football.
Quarterback Competition Continues
Stewart had been part of a quarterback competition in the program’s first fall camp under head coach Joey Jones, though he was injured during the opening week of practice. After a practice during the opening week of camp, Jones said Stewart “would be involved” in the competition if healthy and that the race among the other quarterbacks remained close.
Myles Gibbon has taken most of the snaps with the first-team offense in camp. Jones has said he does not want to name a starter yet.
“Some guys do things better than others, but I’m really holding back until we see them for a couple of weeks because you don’t want to make a comment based on one or two practices,” Jones said.
Building a New Program
South Alabama is preparing for the first season in the history of its football program, which begins play this fall. The Jaguars are in the second week of preseason practice, a stretch that includes the program’s first two-a-day sessions and its first fall scrimmage.
Stewart’s departure trims the number of quarterbacks on the roster as the staff works to settle on a starter and build depth at the position before the inaugural season opener. Jones has emphasized that the coming days of practice are critical for evaluating players at every position.
