Dozens of rising seniors from Mobile and Baldwin County high schools have been selected to represent the South squad during the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Week, a showcase of the state’s top talent that opens Monday in Montgomery.
Now in its 25th year, the summer gathering brings together standout players and coaches from across Alabama for a week of North-versus-South competition spanning eight sports, along with coaching clinics and conferences held alongside the games. The week runs from Monday through Friday, with each sport’s stars taking the field on a different day.
Every athlete chosen for the rosters is a rising senior who has been recognized as among the best in their sport within their classification. The all-star football game, once a marquee event of the week, has since been shifted to a standalone December date; last year’s contest was played at the University of South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile.
Competition begins Monday with boys and girls golf at Arrowhead Country Club and baseball at Riverwalk Stadium. Tennis and basketball follow on Tuesday for both boys and girls. Wednesday’s slate includes softball, along with boys and girls cross country and boys and girls soccer. The week wraps up Thursday with the volleyball all-star match.
The South rosters are stacked with players from schools throughout the Mobile and Baldwin County area, a reflection of the region’s deep bench of high school talent heading into the fall season.
In girls tennis, the South roster includes Anna Marie Bentley of St. Luke’s, Danielle Day and Anna Louch of Saraland, and Libbie Hamilton, Mary Michael Key and Margaret Sullivan of St. Paul’s. The boys tennis squad features Nick Short of McGill-Toolen, Gabriel Perkins of Satsuma and Calvin Hughes of Fairhope.
On the golf course, the girls team includes Laura Burch and Jordyn Martin of McGill-Toolen and Ella Kate Hewes of Daphne, coached by UMS-Wright’s Jay Koziol. The boys golf roster features Stephen Baker and Pack Stabler of St. Paul’s, Coleman Boothe and Hank Miner of Fairhope, Will Howard of UMS-Wright and Cole Komyati of Bayside Academy, also under Koziol’s direction.
The girls soccer roster is led by Fairhope’s Allison Bailey, Baldwin County’s Maddie Beaver, Satsuma’s Lizzy Brewer, Faith Academy’s Alyvia Collins, Alma Bryant’s Blakeney Horne, Daphne’s Coryn Littleken, Bayside Academy’s Rhiannon Tkac, and St. Paul’s duo Sydney Lewis and Leah Robinson, coached by St. Paul’s Ashley Johnson. On the boys side, the roster includes Bayside Academy’s Ty Ferguson, Faith Academy’s Gideon Garcia, St. Luke’s players William Hernandez-Sexton and Kevin Ori, Davidson’s Baronyi Kengeye, UMS-Wright’s Thomas Price, Citronelle’s Pedro Rodriguez, St. Michael’s Graham Roh, Baldwin County’s Ferris Ronquille and McGill-Toolen’s Patrick Wentworth.
The softball roster features Fairhope’s Audrey Johnson, Daphne’s Liz Nolan, Gulf Shores’ Kailin Parker and Spanish Fort’s Hannah Weishaar. On the diamond for baseball, the South roster includes Baldwin County’s Justin Brunson, Mobile Christian’s Grant Jay and Charlie Keller, Saraland’s Trevor Pope, Gulf Shores’ Thrasher Steed and Faith Academy’s Colton Wood, with Baldwin County’s Kyle Hunter serving as an assistant coach.
On the hardwood, the girls basketball roster includes Gulf Shores’ Madison Dowing, Vigor’s Janiya Labyzon, UMS-Wright’s Dorsey Parker, Davidson’s Kelsey Thompson and Fairhope’s Reagan White, coached by UMS-Wright’s Terry Canova. The boys basketball squad features McGill-Toolen’s Barry Dunning Jr., Spanish Fort’s Cameron Keshock and Colby McAllister, and Williamson’s Robert Woodyard.
The area is well represented in cross country as well. The girls roster includes Cottage Hill’s Olivia Andrews, UMS-Wright’s Annie Jeffery, McGill-Toolen’s Mary Mattingly and Baker’s Emma Sibley. The boys team features Fairhope’s David Amare and Justin Walker, St. Paul’s William Jameson, St. Michael’s Thomas Miller and UMS-Wright’s Joseph Perry.
Rounding out the local contingent is the volleyball roster, which includes St. Paul’s Rachel Bell, Bayside Academy’s Ella Broadhead and Luci Wilkinson, St. Luke’s Ella Bryant, McGill-Toolen’s Alexia Cole, Fairhope’s Kate Murray, UMS-Wright’s Dorsey Parker, St. Michael’s Juliet Petruzelli, Baker’s Amber Silvers and Spanish Fort’s Brianne Wigley, coached by St. Luke’s Meredith Donald.
With competition spread across five days and eight sports, All-Star Week gives fans across the state a final chance to watch this class of standout seniors compete before they move on to college programs or their final prep seasons this fall.
