MOBILE, Ala. — Comedian Matt Mathews was scheduled to perform at Mobile’s Regions Arena in March, but those shows have been moved.
The shows, originally scheduled for March 6, 2027, have been moved to April 3.
Why the Date Changed
The change follows Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis’ announcement that Regions Arena would not be hosting Mardi Gras events in 2027.
Cheriogotis said that due to several rain days, work on the arena has taken longer than expected.
Weather delays are the most common cause of schedule slippage on large construction projects, and they compound in a way that is not always obvious. A rain day is rarely a single lost day; wet conditions can make a site unworkable afterward, and trades scheduled in sequence have to be resequenced when one falls behind.
For an arena, the consequence runs straight into the booking calendar. Venues sell dates well in advance, and a construction schedule that moves forces those dates to move with it.
The First Act Announced
Mathews was the first act announced to perform at the arena, with his first show selling out just 15 minutes after general public tickets went on sale. Because of that, a second show was added.
That sell-out speed is a meaningful data point for a venue that has not yet opened. A new arena’s early bookings are watched closely as an indication of whether the market will support the building, and a sub-15-minute sell-out for a comedy date suggests regional demand that previously had nowhere local to go.
Ticket Status
The 8 p.m. show is sold out. Tickets are still available for the 4 p.m. show.
Ticket holders for the original March 6 date should check with the point of purchase regarding transfer to the new April 3 date.
Regions Arena and Mardi Gras 2027
The decision that the arena will not host Mardi Gras events in 2027 is the larger scheduling consequence of the construction delay. Mobile’s Carnival season is the city’s signature event period, and a new arena’s first Mardi Gras is the kind of debut a venue plans around.
Moving the Mathews shows to April places them after Carnival season rather than before it, on a spring weekend date.
