Matt Mathews' Sold-Out Regions Arena Shows Move From March to April 3 After Arena Delays

MOBILE, Ala. — Comedian Matt Mathews was scheduled to perform at Mobile’s Regions Arena in March, but those shows have been moved.

The shows, originally scheduled for March 6, 2027, have been moved to April 3.

Why the Date Changed

The change follows Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis’ announcement that Regions Arena would not be hosting Mardi Gras events in 2027.

Cheriogotis said that due to several rain days, work on the arena has taken longer than expected.

Weather delays are the most common cause of schedule slippage on large construction projects, and they compound in a way that is not always obvious. A rain day is rarely a single lost day; wet conditions can make a site unworkable afterward, and trades scheduled in sequence have to be resequenced when one falls behind.

For an arena, the consequence runs straight into the booking calendar. Venues sell dates well in advance, and a construction schedule that moves forces those dates to move with it.

The First Act Announced

Mathews was the first act announced to perform at the arena, with his first show selling out just 15 minutes after general public tickets went on sale. Because of that, a second show was added.

That sell-out speed is a meaningful data point for a venue that has not yet opened. A new arena’s early bookings are watched closely as an indication of whether the market will support the building, and a sub-15-minute sell-out for a comedy date suggests regional demand that previously had nowhere local to go.

Ticket Status

The 8 p.m. show is sold out. Tickets are still available for the 4 p.m. show.

Tickets already purchased for the original March 6 date will be honored for the rescheduled April 3 performances, according to Regions Arena.

Regions Arena and Mardi Gras 2027

The decision that the arena will not host Mardi Gras events in 2027 is the larger scheduling consequence of the construction delay. Mobile’s Carnival season is the city’s signature event period, and a new arena’s first Mardi Gras is the kind of debut a venue plans around.

Moving the Mathews shows to April places them after Carnival season rather than before it, on a spring weekend date.

Update: Tickets honored; arena’s first shows now set for late March

Regions Arena has confirmed that previously purchased tickets will carry over to the new date, so fans holding seats for March 6, 2027, do not need to buy new ones. The two performances are now set for 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2027.

The postponement traces back to Sept. 11, when Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis announced that the arena’s construction timetable had slipped because of rainy weather and that the building would not be ready for Mobile’s 2027 Mardi Gras season. City leaders had hoped to have the arena open in time for Carnival festivities.

No formal opening date for the building has been announced. Since the Mathews shows were moved, however, Mobile’s own Red Clay Strays have been booked for the arena’s first concerts, March 25, 26 and 27, 2027, with St. Paul & The Broken Bones as special guest. The city has described those shows as an early activation of the venue ahead of its mid-spring contractual completion. That puts the Mathews performances about one week after the arena’s first events.
