Shoplifting Suspect Escapes Mobile Wal-Mart by Kicking Through Ceiling

James Bullard, March 15, 2015

A bizarre escape attempt at a Mobile Wal-Mart on Dawes Road left shoppers and employees stunned this week after a shoplifting suspect climbed into the store’s ceiling and kicked his way back out near the front entrance.

According to witnesses and police, a loss prevention officer had wrestled the man back into the store after he tried to walk out with several items without paying. The confrontation happened near the store’s front doors on a weekday afternoon, catching the attention of nearby customers, including a bystander who captured much of the incident on video.

“It was insane,” the bystander said, describing the chaotic scene that unfolded as he and a family member arrived at the store. After the initial struggle, employees escorted the suspect into a security office, but he soon began banging against the door from inside. Several workers braced themselves against the door in an attempt to keep him contained.

Sometime after that, the noise changed, and it became clear the man had found another way out. The bystander and his relative had moved to a food counter inside the store when they heard loud banging coming from above. Moments later, the suspect broke through a section of ceiling tile near the counter, briefly making eye contact with onlookers below before disappearing back into the crawlspace to search for another exit.

He resurfaced above a set of sliding glass doors near an entrance, where video shows him kicking through more ceiling material and dangling from the opening before dropping to the floor. He then bolted through the doors, sprinted across the parking lot, and escaped in a waiting car, according to accounts of the incident.

Mobile Police confirmed that the suspect had taken several items, including a debit card, footwear, a hat, a watch and clothing, but a police spokesperson said the items were recovered after the man dropped them somewhere in the store before fleeing. As of this report, the suspect had not been identified or apprehended.

The unusual escape has become a talking point among Mobile shoppers, many of whom say they’ve never seen anything like it at the busy retail location. Store officials have not commented publicly on how the ceiling was damaged or whether the incident will change security procedures at the location.

Mobile Police continue to review surveillance footage from the store as part of the ongoing investigation into the theft. Anyone with information about the suspect’s identity is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
