Quintin Berry struggled Sunday to find the words to describe what Mobile’s music community was doing for him, as musicians and fans packed Veet’s Bar for a benefit held in his honor.

“I am so overwhelmed about the whole thing,” Berry said during the Bass for Berry benefit, which raised money to help him ahead of surgery scheduled for Sept. 9. “I still can’t believe it.”

Berry thanked everyone who helped organize the event, along with the Veet’s family, the musicians who performed and everyone who came out to support him. “I could barely say what I want to say because it’s just too much at one time,” he said. “But I am so thankful that this has happened for me.” Berry said he is feeling good as he waits for his surgery and is trying to take things easy in the meantime. “I have to wait my turn and kind of chill and take it easy,” he said.

For Berry, much of Sunday’s conversation centered less on his upcoming procedure and more on the community that turned out for him. “I’ve been a Mobile fan ever since I lived here, and I’m always going to be because of the love of the music community and the way people treat each other,” he said. Seeing so many musicians and friends come together on his behalf, he said, was still difficult to fully take in. “I can’t complain,” he said.
