Mobile’s growing country scene keeps pulling talent from across the Southeast, and one of its favorite visitors returns this week: Montgomery’s River Dan plays Cedar Street Social Club, 4 N. Cedar St., on Friday, June 19 at 8 p.m. Details are available at 251-378-8028.
River Dan has built a solid following around Mobile with a sound steeped in traditional country, moving comfortably from banjo to guitar. He describes his songs as dirt-road sermons on “the trials and tribulations of the life of a simple man, blondes and being a rambler.”
From debut album to new single
The singer’s 2017 debut, “Substance Abuse and a Woman on the Loose,” paired a deep baritone with bright acoustic work in the tradition of Waylon Jennings, ranging from stomping numbers like “All the Time” to the jaunty title track.
Last year he released “Living My Best Life,” an unapologetic country anthem about the pleasures of a simple existence. Doubled vocals and harmonica drive the hooks, showing an evolving songwriter while keeping the traditional qualities that made his first studio impression memorable. Both records translate naturally to a live room, which is exactly what the Cedar Street crowd will get.
