A pair of Fairhope songwriters will bring their new studio material to one of Mobile’s favorite neighborhood pubs when Barstow Revival takes the stage at Callaghan’s Irish Social Club, 916 Charleston St., on Sunday, July 7 at 7 p.m. Fans can call 251-433-9374 for ticket details.
The duo pairs singer-songwriter Jay Megginson, who was relatively new to writing songs when the project began, with guitarist Drew Howard, a seasoned sideman who relocated from Austin, Texas. The two met through an impromptu gig and have been performing their self-described “eclectic, soulful, psychedelic Americana” together ever since.
A minimalist first offering
“Road,” the band’s debut EP, is its first release, built on an organic, deliberately stripped-down approach across five tracks. Megginson and Howard let their guitars carry the rhythm throughout, with layers of strings and close vocal harmonies filling the space left by the absence of percussion.
The result blends folk and traditional country into a distinctly modern Americana sound — notable timing for a genre label that has been stretched nearly to its limits by the wider music industry.
The Callaghan’s date gives local listeners an early live taste of the new material in the kind of intimate room the duo’s songs were made for.
