A new Bay Minette hotel is now welcoming guests downtown. The Cobblestone Hotel & Suites, a 54-room property directly across from Bay Minette City Hall, opened its doors on Aug. 28, 2026, and local officials say the privately funded project, which cost more than $10 million, is a sign of the economic momentum building in North Baldwin County.
The hotel sits at 212 W. First St. It is the second Cobblestone property in Baldwin County, joining an existing location in Foley in the southern part of the county.
A New Downtown Anchor
Hotels in the heart of a small city do more than provide rooms. They bring visitors who eat at local restaurants, shop at nearby businesses and attend events, and they give companies, government agencies and families a convenient place to house guests. For Bay Minette, which has been working to strengthen its downtown, a new hotel across the street from City Hall places overnight visitors within walking distance of the city’s central business district.
Bay Minette is the county seat of Baldwin County, which means a steady stream of people come to town for business at the Baldwin County Courthouse and county offices. Attorneys, jurors, contractors, consultants and others with county business are among the travelers who may benefit from lodging close to the downtown core.
Growth Tied to the South Alabama Megasite
In announcing the opening, Cobblestone officials pointed to economic activity in the region, including expansion at the South Alabama Megasite near Bay Minette. The megasite is home to Novelis’ $5 billion aluminum plant, which is expected to begin commercial shipments in the second quarter of 2027.
The Novelis project is one of the largest economic development investments in Alabama history. The Atlanta-based company, a global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, announced the Baldwin County plant in 2022. The facility is designed to produce aluminum sheet for beverage cans and automotive uses and to use a high share of recycled aluminum. It is expected to create about 1,000 jobs when fully operating.
The megasite itself is a large industrial property north of Bay Minette that Baldwin County economic development leaders spent years preparing to attract a major employer, with access to highways, rail and utilities. Landing Novelis was the culmination of that effort, and county leaders have said they hope the plant will attract suppliers and related businesses over time.
A project of that size ripples outward. Construction crews, engineers, vendors and eventually permanent employees all need places to stay, eat and live. Communities near major industrial projects often see new demand for hotels, apartments, houses, restaurants and retail, and North Baldwin leaders have been preparing for that kind of growth for several years.

North Baldwin’s Changing Landscape
For decades, much of Baldwin County’s growth has been concentrated along the Eastern Shore and the coast, in communities such as Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Baldwin has been among the fastest-growing counties in Alabama for years, driven by retirees, remote workers, families and tourism.
North Baldwin, including Bay Minette, Stockton, Stapleton and the surrounding rural areas, has historically grown more slowly. The megasite and the Novelis plant have changed that conversation, drawing new attention to the area’s land, highway access and workforce. Bay Minette sits along State Highway 59 and near Interstate 65, giving it connections to Mobile, the beaches and routes north.
Local officials have described the new hotel as a reflection of that shift, one of several signs that private investors see opportunity in the northern half of the county.
What It Means for Visitors and Residents
For residents, a new downtown hotel means more options when friends and relatives come to visit for weddings, reunions, funerals or holidays. For the city, hotel stays typically generate lodging tax revenue that can support local services and tourism promotion. And for nearby businesses, more overnight guests can mean more customers.
North Baldwin also has plenty to offer leisure travelers. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta, one of the most biodiverse river systems in North America, lies just to the west, with boat launches, kayak trails and fishing spots. Historic Blakeley State Park, Civil War history, and the small river communities along State Highway 225 draw outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs, and a downtown Bay Minette hotel offers a convenient base for exploring them.
