BRATT, Fla. — The Northview Chiefs opened their season in dominant fashion Thursday night, rolling to a 40-6 victory over Niceville’s Rocky Bayou Christian Knights at home.
Northview seized control early in a game delayed nearly 30 minutes by lightning in the area. Play began in light rain under welcome cooler conditions, and by halftime the Chiefs had built a commanding 40-0 lead behind a three-touchdown performance from Tyson Phifer.
How the scoring unfolded
Phifer opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 3-yard rushing touchdown, followed quickly by a 4-yard scoring run from Caleb Levins.
The Chiefs broke the game open in the second quarter. Phifer reached the end zone twice more on runs of 16 and 20 yards, while Levins connected with JJ Jacobs on an 18-yard touchdown pass. Jacobs added a 2-yard touchdown run of his own.
Five second-quarter possessions produced five scores. That kind of stretch typically reflects a line winning at the point of attack rather than any single skill-position performance, and Northview’s ability to run for scores of 3, 4, 16 and 20 yards suggests a ground game working at multiple levels.
Mercy rule shortens the night
With the FHSAA running-clock mercy rule in effect for the entire second half, the game moved quickly. Rocky Bayou’s lone highlight came as time expired, a 40-yard touchdown pass that avoided the shutout.
What’s next
The Chiefs (1-0) hit the road next Friday to face the McIntosh Demons in Washington County, Alabama, roughly 40 miles north of Mobile. The cross-state trip is a familiar one for Northview, whose location in the far northwest corner of Florida places several Alabama programs closer than many of its in-state counterparts.
