MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama quarterback Ross Metheny was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after accounting for four touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 41-39 victory over Tulane on Saturday at the Superdome in New Orleans.
Four Touchdowns in New Orleans
Metheny, a 6-foot-3, 203-pound senior from Stephens City, Va., who transferred to South Alabama from Virginia, led the Jaguars in rushing with 75 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 19 of 30 passes for 290 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
He set two game records and led South Alabama to its highest yardage total against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent. The win ended a seven-game losing streak dating to the 2012 season.
Among Conference Leaders
Through two games, Metheny ranks third in the Sun Belt in passing efficiency at 157.38, third in total offense at 239.5 yards per game and fifth in passing at 201 yards per game.
Defensive Honor to Troy’s Garner
Troy’s Jadarius Garner was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after recording seven tackles, including three for loss and two sacks, in the Trojans’ 66-3 win over Savannah State.
Western Kentucky Next
South Alabama hosts Western Kentucky on Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. The Jaguars are coached by Joey Jones.
