MOBILE, Ala. — Less than a week before Veterans Day, a local group of women who call themselves the “Sassy Stitchers” gave 18 veterans something warm to take home.

The group gathered for breakfast at the Tillman’s Corner Senior Center, where each of the veterans was called to the front, recognized for service and wrapped in a patriotic, handmade Quilt of Valor.

“Words can’t describe it”

Recipients said they were touched and honored.

“I really appreciate it. I really am honored they selected me to have the quilt,” veteran Paul Worthey said.

Chester Williams said he appreciates the time and effort that went into the quilt. “I plan to take it home and wrap it around me when I’m watching TV,” he said.

James Abner said his quilt reminded him of his graduation robe. “The idea of the quilting — it expresses warmth, it expresses devotion, and it expresses conviction,” he said.

Gerald Crosby had immediate plans. “I enjoyed it. I love it. I’m going to use it tonight. I will,” he said.

Others used the moment to reflect. “I feel like there’s a lot of people other than me that needs to be thanked for what they’ve done,” said Leo Strachan.

“You can tell there was very detailed work that went into it. I’m very appreciative of the quilts,” said Lawanna Johnson.

Dr. Andrea Baker said, “I’m just blessed and honored for at least the opportunity that someone thought about me because of what I gave to my country.”

“It’s overwhelming. It’s fantastic. Words can’t describe it,” Daniel Lewis said.

For Gabriel Peck, the gift brought back an old memory. “This is beautiful. This takes me back when I was a young boy — watching my grandmother make quilts like this,” he said. He plans to put it on his bed.

A national effort

Quilts of Valor was founded in 2003. The organization has awarded more than 467,000 quilts to service members and veterans nationwide.

Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
