There is a moment, early in a first visit to Slurp Society, when the menu stops looking intimidating and starts looking like an invitation. The ramen shop on St. Michael Street in downtown Mobile — in the space where Von’s Restaurant used to be — rewards that small leap of faith with some of the most inventive cooking in the city, served in a room small enough to feel like a secret.

A group of friends discovered as much over dinner recently, including a couple of experienced regulars who were eating there for the fifth time. Their advice, and the staff’s patience, turned a first-timer’s uncertainty into an evening worth repeating.

A Small Room, Done Right

Slurp Society is compact: a bar runs along the right side, tables line the left, and a dining area up front accommodates larger parties. Reservations are recommended, and for good reason — the room fills. The five friends took adjoining tables toward the rear, settled in with cocktails, and started working through the menu, where every item comes with a genuinely detailed description. That extra writing matters: it turns browsing into a guided tour.

Munchies, Buns and Bowls

Appetizers are listed under the heading “munchies,” and the veterans at the table steered the group straight to the Beet Kaarage, a crunchy starter with a distinctively earthy sweetness. Chopsticks ready, the table moved on to the main event: the Slurp O.G., a large bowl of noodles served with Society Broth, roasted kale, pickled onions, scallion, black garlic oil and a soft egg — accompanied by a bowl of cubed roasted pork belly for passing and adding spoonful by spoonful.

The Society Broth comes in several flavors, and the O.G. version proved ideal for sharing. The technique, the group concluded, is two-fisted: chopsticks for the noodles, soup spoons for the broth. When the bowl was empty, the consensus was that a second one could have disappeared just as easily.

The restaurant’s “Bao Down” options make an excellent second act — the Sesame Crab Cake, Tempura Green Tomato and Chicken Kaarage, each tucked into a light, steamed dough bun, something like a taco in a pillowy wrapper. They are positioned as snacks or light meals, and a mix-and-match spread of them is the way to go for a table that wants to taste broadly.

What’s Next Time

Every first visit produces a list of regrets, and this one’s is well-defined: the Banh Mi Smashburger, made with Wagyu beef, American cheese, carrot and daikon slaw, cucumbers, pickled chilis, cilantro lime aioli and “all the herbs” on a pretzel bun. For dessert, the Togarashi Cheesecake with miso caramel and candied peanuts waits at the end of the menu — a fittingly cross-cultural finish to a meal that travels happily between traditions.

Why It Works

Part of Slurp Society’s appeal is simple hospitality. The server was, as the dinner companions put it, kind and patient with a table that needed a minute to get its bearings. Prices came in more than reasonable for the quality, the service stayed attentive through the evening, and the room’s energy — small, busy, convivial — did the rest.

Downtown Mobile has grown into a genuinely interesting dining neighborhood in recent years, and a dedicated ramen shop with a distinct point of view is exactly the kind of restaurant that rewards it. The store of knowledge acquired in one visit — broth styles, bao construction, the proper division of labor between chopsticks and spoon — is the kind diners enjoy showing off, and the kind that brings new faces back through the door at 69 St. Michael Street.

Go hungry, go curious, and if the menu looks daunting on arrival, take the veterans’ word for it: it is not as daunting as it first appears.

Update: Slurp Society to close; final day is Sept. 30 (Sept. 23, 2026)

Slurp Society has announced it is closing. In a social media post on Tuesday, Sept. 22, the downtown Mobile ramen restaurant said this would be its final week of business, with its last day of service planned for Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The restaurant opened in 2022 on St. Michael Street and moved in 2024 to Dauphin Street, next door to Wintzell’s Oyster House. After a brief shutdown, it reopened in 2025 with new ownership and a new menu.

“It’s heartbreaking to have to close the doors on a place that so many people have leaned on as a space that’s just a little different than all the others around downtown,” the restaurant wrote.

The owners said their top concern is making sure every employee has a job opportunity before the final day, and they are seeking leads for front- and back-of-house positions from other local businesses. They also invited customers to stop by one last time.
