MOBILE, Ala. — The South Alabama baseball team hosts Arkansas State in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Eddie Stanky Field beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m., and head football coach Joey Jones announced that junior college defensive back Quinton Dent has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Jaguars.
Baseball Hosts Arkansas State
Locke St. John (3-1) will make his ninth start of the season against Arkansas State right-hander David Owen (4-1) in Friday’s opener.
South Alabama took two of three games from Texas State last weekend but lost 15-4 at Nicholls State in midweek play. The Jaguars are 15-17 overall and 5-6 in the Sun Belt.
Right-hander Kevin Hill (2-4) will face left-hander Chandler Hawkins (2-4) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday, with right-hander Bradley Wallace (3-3) scheduled to start for the Red Wolves. South Alabama has not named a Sunday starter.
Arkansas State is 18-15 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
Softball at Louisiana-Lafayette
The South Alabama softball team travels to Lafayette, La., for a three-game series with Louisiana-Lafayette, beginning with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Jaguars are 31-6 overall and 8-2 in the Sun Belt after a 3-2 win over Mississippi State. Louisiana-Lafayette has won 13 straight games and leads the conference at 9-0, with a 28-6-1 overall record.
Track Hosts South Alabama Invitational
The South Alabama men’s and women’s track and field teams will host the 14th annual South Alabama Invitational at Jaguar Track on Friday and Saturday, their third and final home meet of the season.
Sun Belt schools Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Troy will compete, along with Belhaven, Birmingham-Southern, Loyola (La.), Tulane, West Florida and William Carey.
The Jaguars will recognize 13 graduating seniors in a brief ceremony Saturday: Tyler Agee, Nick Farell, Leah Hixon, Noelle Jones, Jarrod Kedzior, Tori Lawson, Jeff Long, Melissa McClusky, Adam Patterson, Garrett Schumacher, Alex Shields, Connor Smith and Bobbie Williamson.
Women’s Golf and Football
The South Alabama women’s golf team will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship beginning Monday at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala. The event runs through Wednesday.
In football, Dent played the past two seasons at Laney College in California. He is the second junior college defensive back to sign with South Alabama this spring, bringing the number of secondary players in the Jaguars’ recruiting class to 10.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound native of Haines City, Fla., earned first-team All-Golden Gate Conference Central Division honors last fall while helping Laney to an 8-3 record. He recorded 32 tackles, 23 of them solo, with three interceptions and a team-high 13 pass breakups. Dent will join the Jaguars this fall.
