FIU Sweep Drops South Alabama Baseball to Fifth in Sun Belt Standings

A weekend sweep by FIU dropped South Alabama baseball to 30-23 overall and 16-11 in the Sun Belt, fifth in the standings with a home series against Troy left.

South Alabama baseball dropped all three games of its weekend series against Florida International, sliding to fifth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with one regular-season series remaining.

The sweep left the Jaguars at 30-23 overall and 16-11 in conference play. FIU moved to 30-20 overall and also stands at 16-11 in the league.

Three Games Back of First

South Alabama now sits three games behind league leader Florida Atlantic, which has completed its regular season.

The Sun Belt standings entering the final weekend:

  • Florida Atlantic, 19-8
  • Louisiana-Lafayette, 18-9
  • Middle Tennessee, 17-10
  • FIU, 16-11
  • South Alabama, 16-11
  • Arkansas State, 15-12
  • Troy, 14-13
  • Western Kentucky, 14-13
  • Arkansas-Little Rock, 10-15
  • Louisiana-Monroe, 7-20
  • New Orleans, 2-26

Troy Series Closes Regular Season

The Jaguars finish the regular season at home with a three-game series against Troy at Eddie Stanky Field in Mobile. Troy enters the weekend at 14-13 in conference play, two games behind South Alabama.

The final series will determine South Alabama’s seeding for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Several of the teams directly ahead of the Jaguars in the standings close the regular season against opponents lower in the standings.

South Alabama is coached by Steve Kittrell, who has led the program since 1984.
