Tennessee Tech Takes Two of Three From South Alabama Baseball in Season-Opening Series

Tennessee Tech won the season-opening series at Eddie Stanky Field two games to one, taking an 11-inning opener and Sunday's finale by 5-4 scores.

MOBILE, Ala. — Tennessee Tech won two of three games against South Alabama at Eddie Stanky Field to take the season-opening baseball series, beating the Jaguars 5-4 in 11 innings Friday and 5-4 on Sunday after South Alabama won 6-3 on Saturday.

Friday: Tennessee Tech 5, South Alabama 4 (11 innings)

South Alabama built a 3-0 lead through two innings, but Tennessee Tech came back to force extra innings.

In the top of the 11th, Jaguars left-hander James Traylor struck out the first two batters before allowing a single and two walks to load the bases. A bases-loaded walk then forced in the deciding run.

Saturday: South Alabama 6, Tennessee Tech 3

Trailing 3-1 after seven and a half innings, South Alabama scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Erik Hindmon tied the game with a two-run double down the right-field line. Drew LaBounty followed with a go-ahead single to center that scored Logan Kirkland. Cameron Cummings, who entered earlier as a pinch runner, singled to right to score Cole Jarman, who was running for Hindmon. Bud Collura capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to left.

Tripp Hobbs earned the win with three innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Sunday: Tennessee Tech 5, South Alabama 4

South Alabama led 1-0 after a two-out double in the first inning. In the fourth, Daniel Miles led off with a single for Tennessee Tech, and two one-out walks loaded the bases. Jordan Hopkins doubled down the right-field line to drive in two runs for a 2-1 Golden Eagles lead.

David Allen followed with a two-out, two-run double to left-center for a 4-1 lead, and an RBI single through the left side made it 5-1 and ended the outing for Jaguars right-hander Ben Taylor.

South Alabama pulled within a run and put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but a groundout ended the game.
