South Alabama Baseball Opens Series at Western Kentucky; No. 19 Softball Hosts Georgia State

South Alabama baseball sends Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Locke St. John to the mound at Western Kentucky, while No. 19 softball hosts Georgia State.

MOBILE, Ala. — The South Alabama baseball team opens a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky., on Friday, while the No. 19 South Alabama softball team hosts Georgia State at Jaguar Field.

Baseball at Western Kentucky

South Alabama (16-20, 6-8 Sun Belt) is trying to end a three-game losing streak and hold on to the eighth and final spot in the field for the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Jaguars lead the all-time series with Western Kentucky 84-51 in a rivalry that dates to 1983.

Left-hander Locke St. John (4-1), the reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, will make his 10th start of the season in Friday’s opener. In his last outing, St. John allowed only three hits with two strikeouts over seven innings as he and the bullpen combined on a shutout.

Western Kentucky (19-18, 7-8) will start Justin Hageman (4-1), who was named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week on March 24.

Right-hander Kevin Hill (2-4) will make his eighth start in game two, and Hunter Soleymani (0-1) will make his fourth start in Sunday’s finale.

South Alabama’s pitching staff is tied for second in the conference with a 3.73 ERA. Western Kentucky ranks eighth in the league with a 4.91 team ERA.

Softball Hosts Georgia State

The 19th-ranked Jaguars play host to Georgia State in their last full Sun Belt series at home this season.

Because of Easter Sunday, the series opens with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday and concludes Saturday.

South Alabama (32-8) won the second game of last weekend’s series against conference leader Louisiana-Lafayette but lost the series two games to one. Georgia State is fourth in the Sun Belt standings with a 7-5 conference record.

The Sun Belt Conference Championship begins May 7.
