MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama basketball hosts Louisiana-Lafayette on consecutive nights at the Mitchell Center this week, with both the men’s and women’s teams trying to end losing streaks.
The women’s team plays the Ragin’ Cajuns at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. The men follow with their game against Louisiana-Lafayette at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
Men Seek to End Six-Game Skid
The Jaguar men enter Thursday’s game on a six-game losing streak and are still looking for their first Sun Belt Conference victory of the season.
South Alabama has won six games this season, and all six have come at the Mitchell Center. The Jaguars’ nonconference schedule included several difficult road games early in the season.
South Alabama carries a 6-11 overall record and an 0-4 mark in league play into the matchup. The men are in their first season under head coach Matthew Graves, who came to Mobile from Butler, where he was an assistant coach.
Senior forward Augustine Rubit, the school’s career rebounding leader, anchors the Jaguars inside, while freshman Ken Williams has emerged as one of the team’s top perimeter scorers.
Scouting the Ragin’ Cajuns
Louisiana-Lafayette is led by guard Elfrid Payton and forward Shawn Long, two of the Sun Belt’s most productive players. The Cajuns visit the Mitchell Center a day after their women’s team faces South Alabama in the same building.
Conference Tournament Implications
With the Sun Belt schedule under way, the Jaguars will need to win both at home and on the road to qualify for the conference tournament.
