MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are both on the road this week for a two-game swing through Arkansas, with Sun Belt Conference games at Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas State.
Lady Jaguars Put Unbeaten League Mark on the Line
The Lady Jaguars, 4-8 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt play under first-year head coach Terry Fowler, play at UALR on Wednesday evening in Little Rock. The Trojans are 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
South Alabama then visits Arkansas State on Saturday afternoon in Jonesboro, with tipoff set for 3:05 p.m. The Red Wolves are 8-6 overall and also 2-0 in league play.
Men Seek First Sun Belt Win
The South Alabama men, 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the Sun Belt, have lost four straight games, including home conference losses at the Mitchell Center to Western Kentucky, 58-56, and Georgia State, 73-63.
The Jaguars play at UALR on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Trojans are 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the conference. South Alabama then plays at Arkansas State on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Red Wolves are 9-4 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Graves Seeks More Aggression
First-year men’s head coach Matthew Graves said after the Georgia State loss that he believes his team can keep improving and still make the season a success. Graves said Augustine Rubit and Mychal Ammons were taking too few shots and that the team as a whole needs to be more aggressive. He also said he needs to do a better job of motivating his players to play with more physicality and aggression.
Graves said he wants to see more passion from his players, whether they make a shot or make a mistake, and does not want them to feel sorry for themselves when shots are not falling. He said the Jaguars are three or four possessions away from turning several losses into wins, and that those possessions are driven by the team’s energy and passion.
