HATTIESBURG, Miss. — South Alabama basketball goes for a 2-0 start Monday night when the Jaguars visit Southern Miss. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Both teams won their season openers. South Alabama pulled away late to beat Carroll 85-64 on Friday night, and Southern Miss used a strong second half to defeat William Carey 86-63.
Opening-Night Recap
Junior John Brown led all scorers against Carroll with 22 points. Brown scored 14 in the second half, making all four of his 3-point attempts after halftime, and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
The Jaguars shot 45.3 percent from the field but outrebounded Carroll 38-27, including 19 offensive rebounds.
Freshman Abdul Lewis led South Alabama with 10 rebounds in his college debut, grabbing all 10 in the first half in 11 minutes. He became the first Jaguar to reach double-digit rebounds in his first career game since Augustine Rubit did it in 2010.
New Coach at Southern Miss
Southern Miss is in its first season under head coach Doc Sadler, who has a 150-107 career record in his ninth season as a head coach.
The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 138 in the Sagarin ratings. South Alabama is No. 280.
Road Opener History
South Alabama is 10-36 all-time in road openers and has lost 18 of its last 20. The Jaguars snapped an 11-game skid in road openers during the 2012-13 season with a 76-71 win at then-No. 24 Florida State in Tallahassee.
