Boyanov’s First Double-Double Helps South Alabama Rally Past Spring Hill 71-54

Georgi Boyanov had career highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds as South Alabama rallied from a slow start to beat Spring Hill 71-54 and improve to 2-3.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama overcame a slow start, closing the first half with six straight points to take the lead and pulling away after halftime for a 71-54 men’s basketball win over crosstown Spring Hill.

Sophomore Georgi Boyanov posted his first career double-double with career highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds. The win improved South Alabama to 2-3 on the season.

Rally Late in the First Half

Spring Hill led for most of the first half, and South Alabama did not take its first lead until the 3:21 mark. The Jaguars scored the final six points of the half to carry the lead into the break, then controlled the second half.

Spring Hill finished with the better shooting percentage, making 40.8 percent of its shots to South Alabama’s 36.4 percent.

South Alabama has started slowly in several games this season. In earlier road games, the Jaguars were unable to recover from large early deficits.

Boyanov Leads the Way

Boyanov made 5 of 7 shots from the field and all three of his free throws.

Senior Dionte Ferguson narrowly missed a double-double of his own with eight points and nine rebounds, adding two steals and a blocked shot. Freshman Taishaun Johnson scored 11 points off the bench.

Matevz Rojc led Spring Hill with 10 points off the bench, making both of his 3-point attempts. James Clarke added nine points as a reserve and went 2 for 3 from 3-point range.

Spring Hill, an NCAA Division II program, is 0-6. The game was an exhibition for the Badgers.
