Troy Hits 16 3-Pointers to Beat South Alabama at the Mitchell Center

Troy made 16 of 30 3-pointers and led wire to wire in a win at South Alabama, dropping the Jaguars to 0-3 at home in Sun Belt play.

MOBILE, Ala. — Troy made 16 of 30 3-point attempts and led from start to finish in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball victory over South Alabama at the Mitchell Center.

Kenny Ware made 6 of 8 shots from beyond the arc and finished with a career-high 20 points, one of five Trojans in double figures.

The loss dropped South Alabama to 0-3 at home against Sun Belt opponents this season. Last season, the Jaguars went 9-0 at home against conference opponents during the regular season.

Troy Pulls Away in First Half

Troy opened with a 15-6 run in the first three-plus minutes. South Alabama answered with a 10-2 spurt to pull within 17-16 with about 12 minutes left in the first half.

The Trojans then scored 20 of the next 22 points over 5:20, making five 3-pointers during the stretch, three of them by Ware, to build a 37-18 lead. South Alabama held Troy without a field goal over the final 3:07 of the half and scored seven points in that span to trail 47-29 at halftime.

Trojans Hold Off Jaguars

Troy’s lead ranged from 16 to 21 points during the first six minutes of the second half. South Alabama got within 18 with 11:38 remaining, but Troy scored the next 11 points in a 1:42 span. The Trojans’ largest lead was 33 points, reached with 8:09 left.

Individual Leaders

Bryan Sherrer led South Alabama with 14 points, making 4 of 8 shots from the field, his only 3-point attempt and all five of his free throws. Domonic Tilford scored 11 and Ronald Douglas added 10.

Ware went 6 of 10 from the field, all of his makes from 3-point range, and made both free throws. He also had six defensive rebounds. Richard Dekl scored 17 points for Troy, Brandon Hazzard had 14, Travis Lee added 11 and Mario Telfair scored 10.
