Brandon Ross Chosen to Wear Mostella’s No. 5; Drew Dearman Named South Alabama’s Most Improved Lineman

Teammates chose running back Brandon Ross to wear Anthony Mostella's No. 5 jersey, and Drew Dearman was named South Alabama's Most Improved Lineman for spring.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama running back Brandon Ross was selected by his teammates to wear the honorary No. 5 jersey in memory of Anthony Mostella, and offensive lineman Drew Dearman was named the Jaguars’ Most Improved Lineman for the spring.

Ross wore the jersey during South Alabama’s Red & Blue Spring Game on Saturday, when the Blue squad beat the Red 17-10.

Honoring Anthony Mostella

Mostella died in the summer of 2010. Each year his No. 5 jersey is given to a graduating senior chosen by teammates to honor his memory.

Ross, a running back, led South Alabama in rushing in the program’s inaugural 2009 season and in 2010 before a knee injury. He transferred to South Alabama after playing his freshman season at Memphis.

Dearman Moves Into Starting Lineup

Dearman earned the Most Improved Lineman award after a spring in which he took over the left guard position. He moves into the starting lineup heading into fall camp.

Dearman, from Vestavia Hills, was the first signee of South Alabama’s 2010 recruiting class.

First FBS Schedule Ahead

South Alabama, coached by Joey Jones, will play its first season as a Sun Belt Conference football member in 2012, the final year of its transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Jaguars play home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
