South Alabama Cross Country Teams Race For Sun Belt Titles In Bowling Green

The South Alabama men's and women's cross country teams compete Saturday at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Bowling Green, Kentucky, with the men ranked in the NCAA South Region top 15.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The South Alabama cross country teams are in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on Saturday to compete at the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships, with both the men’s and women’s squads looking to improve on their finishes from a year ago.

The championship meet brings together the cross country programs of the Sun Belt Conference to decide the league’s team and individual titles for the 2012 season.

Men Enter Ranked In South Region

The Jaguar men arrive at the conference meet ranked among the top 15 teams in the NCAA Division I South Region. The men’s team moved into the regional rankings after winning the Choctaw Open in Mississippi two weeks before the championship.

The South Region rankings are used to track teams over the course of the season leading into the NCAA regional meets, which follow the conference championships later in the fall.

Building On 2011 Finishes

South Alabama posted solid results at last year’s Sun Belt Championships. The Jaguar men finished sixth in the team standings in 2011, while the South Alabama women placed third.

The women’s team returns to the conference meet looking to stay among the top teams in the league, while the men look to move up the standings after their win at the Choctaw Open and their entry into the regional rankings.

What Is At Stake

Saturday’s meet determines the Sun Belt team champions for both men and women, along with individual titles and all-conference honors based on finishing position. Results from the conference championships also factor into each team’s standing heading into the NCAA South Region meet.

South Alabama is a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
