MOBILE, Ala. — Four South Alabama teams earned Sun Belt Conference Team Academic Awards on Thursday, twice as many as any other member of the league.
The Jaguar softball team, the men’s and women’s cross country teams and the men’s track and field team were honored.
How the Award Works
The Sun Belt recognizes one team in each of its 16 sponsored sports. The award goes to the team with the highest grade point average, determined by adding the GPAs of all student-athletes on the roster and dividing by the number of student-athletes. The figures are based on the full previous academic year’s GPA rather than an average of semesters.
Department-Wide Results
South Alabama Athletics had a record 100 student-athletes on the Dean’s List during the spring semester, and 189 student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Ten Jaguar programs carried a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
Bubas Cup Finish
South Alabama also finished second in the Bubas Cup standings for the 2013-14 academic year. The Bubas Cup recognizes the Sun Belt’s top overall athletic program based on competition. The runner-up finish was the school’s best in more than a decade.
