MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama set a school record with 162 student-athletes earning Sun Belt academic honors for the 2014-15 academic year, the Sun Belt Conference office announced Wednesday. The Sun Belt academic honors include the Commissioner’s List and the Academic Honor Roll.
The total ranked sixth in the conference and surpassed the previous school record of 155, set in 2013-14, by seven.
Tied for Second on Commissioner’s List
South Alabama’s 88 selections to the Commissioner’s List tied for second in the Sun Belt. The list recognizes student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher over the previous two semesters.
Another 74 Jaguars were named to the Academic Honor Roll, which honors student-athletes with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 over the same span.
Honorees by Sport
Three South Alabama programs had more than 20 honorees:
- Football: 28
- Women’s cross country and track and field: 25
- Men’s cross country and track and field: 21
Baseball added 15 honorees, soccer had 13 and softball had 12. The remaining honorees came from South Alabama’s other sports programs.
Bubas Cup Winner
The academic honors follow South Alabama’s capture of the Vic Bubas Cup in May. The cup is awarded to the Sun Belt Conference’s top overall program in athletic competition. Four South Alabama programs won Sun Belt championships during the 2014-15 year: soccer, men’s cross country, baseball and women’s tennis.
