MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama head football coach Joey Jones has narrowed the list of candidates for his vacant defensive coordinator position to six or seven, according to reports, with interviews scheduled over the next day or two.
The opening was created when defensive coordinator Bill Clark accepted the head coaching job at Jacksonville State University.
More Than 150 Applicants
Jones told AL.com that he received more than 150 applications for the job and was not surprised by the response.
“This is a good, Division I coordinator’s job,” Jones said. “It pays well and it’s a good situation here. I expected to get a lot of people applying for the job.”
The names of the candidates have not been released.
Recruiting Calendar
Jones is expected to fill the position by around Jan. 11, when coaches may resume recruiting, though that is not a firm deadline. National Signing Day, the first day high school seniors may sign National Letters of Intent, is Feb. 6.
South Alabama completed its first season as a transitional Football Bowl Subdivision member and Sun Belt Conference football member this fall. Jones has led the program since its founding, and the Jaguars play their home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
