MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama head coach Joey Jones and his staff will hold five football camps across the state later this month, beginning with a two-day camp on the university’s campus and continuing with one-night stops in Dothan, Montgomery, Birmingham and Decatur.
Two-Day Camp in Mobile
The Mobile camp, for players in grades nine through 12, is set for June 20 and 21 on the South Alabama intramural fields in front of the Football Fieldhouse. Campers can attend both days and stay overnight on campus for $200, attend both days and commute for $180, or attend one day without an overnight stay for $100. The coaching staff will teach fundamentals at each position.
Camps Around the State
The four regional camps are shorter versions of the Mobile camp. Each costs $30 per participant and is open to players in grades nine through 12.
- Dothan: June 22, Rip Hewes Stadium, 6-8:30 p.m.
- Montgomery: June 23, Park Crossing High School, 5-7:30 p.m.
- Birmingham: June 24, Oak Mountain High School, 6-8:30 p.m.
- Decatur: June 25, Decatur High School, 6-8:30 p.m.
7-on-7 Team Camp
South Alabama will also host a 7-on-7 camp on June 19 from 4 to 9 p.m. on the Jaguar Practice Fields behind the Football Fieldhouse. The camp is open to full teams of players in grades nine through 12, is held in conjunction with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and costs $345 per team.
Building on Last Season
South Alabama went 6-6 overall last season, its first as a full Football Bowl Subdivision member eligible for postseason play. The Jaguars were bowl eligible but did not receive a bowl invitation. They finished third in the Sun Belt Conference at 4-3 after closing with three straight wins, including a 30-8 season-ending victory over Sun Belt co-champion Louisiana-Lafayette.
The camps are part of the staff’s effort to reach prospects throughout Alabama. Jones told Alabama Media Group that last season, including a close game at Tennessee in Knoxville, raised the program’s profile.
“People look at what we did in our first season of D1 (competition) last year and (prospects) saw the Tennessee game,” Jones said. “It’s just amazing what a game like that can do (in terms of recognition). There’s just a lot of excitement around the program and the players are seeing that.”
2014 Schedule Highlights
South Alabama opens the 2014 season Sept. 6 at Kent State, then hosts Mississippi State at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Sept. 13. Between the Mississippi State game and a Nov. 22 trip to South Carolina, the Jaguars play eight Sun Belt games in nine weeks. They close the regular season at home against Navy.
Registration is available online at jaguarfootballcamps.com or on site at each camp.
