South Alabama Football Camps Tour State; USA Today Ranks Jaguars 72nd in Preseason Countdown

South Alabama's football staff is touring the state with youth camps in Montgomery, Birmingham and Decatur, while USA Today ranked the Jaguars 72nd in its preseason countdown.

MOBILE, Ala. — Head coach Joey Jones and the South Alabama coaching staff are in the middle of a June swing of South Alabama football camps across the state, with stops in Montgomery, Birmingham and Decatur remaining this week.

The tour opened with a two-day camp on the South Alabama campus on Friday and Saturday and continued Sunday night at Rip-Hewes Stadium in Dothan.

Remaining Camp Schedule

  • Montgomery: Park Crossing High School, 5-7:30 p.m. Monday
  • Birmingham: Oak Mountain High School, 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday
  • Decatur: Decatur High School, 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday

Each of the remaining camps costs $30 per participant and is open to ninth- through 12th-graders.

The sessions are shortened versions of the two-day camp held on campus over the weekend. South Alabama’s coaches will work with campers on the fundamentals of each position.

USA Today Preseason Ranking

In a preseason countdown of all 128 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, USA Today’s Paul Myerberg on Saturday ranked South Alabama 72nd.

Myerberg’s position-by-position breakdown highlighted the Jaguars’ offensive line, which he said should be the difference for the team. He noted that South Alabama has all-conference linemen at both tackle positions and both guard spots.

He also pointed to the openings South Alabama must fill in its defensive front seven, with replacements needed on the defensive line and at linebacker.

Looking Ahead

South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile. Jones has led the program since it began play in 2009.

Update: Turner Brothers Featured During Dothan Camp Stop

South Alabama assistant coaches John and Brian Turner, who are brothers, were featured by Jon Johnson of the Dothan Eagle during the staff’s camp stop in Dothan.

Both were hired in 2008, when head coach Joey Jones was assembling the program’s first coaching staff, and they are the only coaches remaining from that original staff. John Turner coaches the tight ends. Brian Turner is the Jaguars’ recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach.
